So I'm off to college in the fall and I need a laptop. Now seeing as many of you are already there or were, I thought I'd inquire as to your opinions. I am taking my desktop as well, so no thought needs to be put into gaming or such things.
Here is what I am currently looking at: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/notebooks/t...s_byo_r52.html Thoughts? |

Truthfully if you already have a desktop then I see no need for a laptop. When you are in class you are going to be trying to concentrate on the teacher, you already have the distractions of college girls and the left over pizza and Dr. pepper in your mini fridge. If you have a laptop in class you are going to be trying to 1.get on other people's networks 2. play some computer game or watch movies. So in closing dont get a laptop, save your money for a 50" Grand WEGA SXRD Rear Projection HDTV and PS3.

While your points are valid, I would prefer to never have to take notes with paper again. I am attempting to avoid the game distractions by buying a laptop incapable of running them with any decency. 1400 dollars isn't a bad hit on the wallet considering what I could be spending, and I worked on IBM's for my high school for two years so I have experience with them. I was just wondering what your opinions of the laptop were, although I see your point.

Does your school have any bargains with a specific manufacturer? JMU (where I'm going) partnered up with Dell and Apple, and subsequently I got my laptop (Duo 2.0 Ghz processors, 256 vid card, 2 gig RAM, 80gb hd) for 1800, which was about 600 off retail. I on the other hand won't be bringing my outdated desktop, so spending the money on this wasn't a big deal. But yeah make sure you try to find out if you can get something cheap through your college.

I worked with Dells as well at my high school, because they have awesome warrantees. Flipside, they break all the god damn time. I have no desire to fix or deal with another Dell ever again. I'm not sure what deals my college offers, I'll have to check up on that.
My PC is far better then any laptop you could purchase and I update it about every six months with new hardware. |

I sailed through university using a Palmtop and a collapsible keyboard for it. Worked like a charm - you can carry it in your pockets, and upon getting home just docked it with the PC, pressed one button and Tadaa... had it all on my desktop. No bulky case-carrying... Though it rather does require speed-typing skills... And being the only one in class typing was kinda funny, when everything else was silent, my tapping on the keyboard was the only other audible sound apart from what the teachers said...

Are you postively sure you need a laptop? I was thinking of getting one before I start college this year, but it turns out my class is gonna supply us with an external HD.
Plus some people here are right. When I was thinking of buying my laptop for school. The only thing on my mind was "Can I play games when Im bored?" Anyways im saving up for a desktop for home instead.

When I go off to college, I dont think I will have this problem, simply because how much notes do you need to take when I am the work (acting is the course im taking), I can see using little notes, like a note pad or something, but nothing too serious. On the other hand, though, the school offers free wireless Internet, thus making me want a laptop... Or I could just use the free Internet in the room, and get a better, cheaper system...
