I recently started working at a local coffee shop. For the first week that I worked there, one of the managers was on vacation. I loved the job and all was well. Then this manager came back from vacation. With her she brought her annoying type A personality. She insists that everyone be doing something at every moment in time. If you appear to be relaxing for a few seconds she will yell at you. I consider myself a relaxed easy going kind of guy, and I am discovering (this being my first job) that I do not work well with type A people. I understand that I am being payed by the hour and I need to make myself useful, but do I really need to be doing something every single second of every single hour that I'm working? Its just a coffee shop for fucks sake. There is no need for complete machine like efficiency. I decided to work for a coffee shop because it seemed like a nice relaxed place to work, and this manager is ruining my experience. Are there any ways of dealing with a superior like this?
And a message to all the type A people that read this. CALM DOWN, RELAX AND SMELL SOME FUCKING ROSES... that is all. |

How old are you? If you're a minor, I think you're entitled to a 30-min break. Entitled as in, it's mandatory for you to be given one, they can't make it part of a hiring plan. I'm not sure if it's a federal law, or if it varies by state. |

To be honest, she's right. You really SHOULD be doing something all the time unless you're on break. The type of boss you expected (lets you just relax when there's nothing immediate to be done) is just one you get lucky with. Sadly, you got one that actually wants to make you work for every cent. Thems the breaks.

Type A people?
I the only one never heard of that before? Work = Pay Here's a tip, don't think of it as... I'm employed here, so I'm gonna get paid think of it as... If I work they'll pay me. That kind of mentality might get you a pay increase. |

Yeah I understand that I have to work for my pay. I don't expect to be able to loaf around all day and get payed for it. I just don't feel comfortable with someone breathing down my neck constantly and getting very angry if i stop being productive for 10 seconds.

Consider yourself lucky, I can do didly shit all day... but I won't get payed. Of course I'm obligated to come in even on dead days where about say... one or two persons will come in to browse. Sure I can do more money then you in a week, but I can also do much much less.
I have 40 hours per week and no garanteed pay. So there.

A Type A personality is more active and outgoing and always on the run.
A Type B personality is more laid back. If I recall correctly that is. I don't know how you get a job and don't expect a boss to work you hard... it's work. Work happens.

Type A personality generally refers to hard workers who are often preoccupied with schedules and the speed of their performance.
Type B personalities may be more creative, imaginative, and philosophical. But that's from 1971... so I doubt type A and B personalities are still correct terms.

Bosses who make you work every second of your shift need to get a life
Women are much worse than men as well. I wouldn't want some asshat breathing down my neck the entire time either. It's just a damn coffee shop. Nothing like creating stress where there doesn't need to be any I hate bosses who create un-needed stress. Just let me do my damn job and leave me alone!!!11 Jaged isn't saying he wants to sit back and drink a beer on the job, just that he doesn't want some power monger breathing down his neck at every second of his shift. I'm a laid back worker, when I am given tasks I get them done. When I have my own tasks I get them done. I don't need some person on a power trip breathing down my neck every second of the day. I work much better when ya leave me alone. At an HS there are parts of the year where there are 10,000 things happening at once and 5 different departments pulling me in every direction, I deal. /rant All it really boils down to is this: If your employee knows how to do his/her job then leave them to do it and stay out of their hair.
