Once again hundreds upon hundreds of stars will march down a red carpet, spend hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars for yet another award show. It is one of the biggest and most prestigious award to be received by producers and actors alike, the Oscars...
Is such a grandiose spectacle required though? To me it's awkward to see that they make such a bit show of the Oscars yet, the people who should be honored are left more or less in the dark. We honor those who make movies... millions of people tune in. Yet the Nobel prize is pretty much left uncovered. Everywhere you look everybody talks about the damn Oscars. If you ask me, this money could be spent in better ways. I hate that we make such a big deal out of actors getting praises for being payed 20 million to shoot a movie, yet in the U.S alone hundreds of thousands of children, who live in a country who spends billions on entertainment alone starve. Couldn't that money be used for oh I don't know? Feed the hungry? Atleast in our country instead of giving more shit to people who don't need free shit? "Oh you were good in that movie! I know you already got 7 million for that movie alone but y'know what? Here's a golden statue and free stuff from our designer sponsor's because we know that coke addiction can be so hard on you!" Discuss. I'm just venting to be honest.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
To be honest it's not even hypocritical of the 'philanthropist' celeb. It's an awards banquet, they aren't stomping on some poor person in order to get a oscar. They are being recognized by their peers for doing their job well. A number of other professional organizations hold awards banquets, they just aren't full of famous people. It used to happen for before it was televised. I bet it would happen even if it wasn't a big country-wide event. Just like those other professional ceremonies. In the end this is what you have in a capitalistic society: Things exist to make money and rarely for anything else. It makes the network that hosts it a ton of money from advertising. Obviously the general public cares about this kind of thing and the ratings show it Otherwise it wouldn't be on the air.

I agree with respecting the good job somebody does. Making such a big deal out of it to stroke egos and spend millions of dollars that could be used in better ways... I don't agree so much with.
But like Rob said, tons of people tune in... reasonable people must follow the unreasonable masses. Even if the mass are idiots who think only of themselves.

Reasonable people rule the unreasonable masses.
For example: Reasonable CEO sees that people care about what is going on in Pop-Culture. Reasonable CEO brainstorms "Hey! Lets televise this awards banquet!" Reasonable CEO turns a profit. Reasonable CEO has done his job. Also, that reasonable CEO's profit... guess what, it's his to spend however the fuck he wants (well, not true - the shareholders are involved, thats why TV is shit). If I had a million dollars and I wanted to buy shipping palettes of bubbles, then by fuck I'm going to have one killer rave. It might not be prudent, but it's life. I guess I'm one of those unreasonable idiots that thinks only of myself? Guess what - way of the world, no matter what Karl Marx thinks should happen. Edit: Also: Televise the awarding of the Nobel Prize? WTF? Actors and Actresses can atleast pretend to relate with the average person. The man that one the Nobel Prize for Physics probably has a Differential Equation somewhere in a text book that he theorizes could be related to "social interaction". Okay, that wasn't really called for.

Why wouldn't a reasonable person try to make money off of something like this? Why can't they spend money on themselves so they can feel better about themselves? In the end, actions of people are not based on the good of those around them. They are based on what makes the person doing the action feel good. This is human nature, get over it.
