I was thinking about an idea about an advert for PS2.
Hire out a stadium, or somewhere that can fit the pop limits, for a day. Get 16 people to stand in the middle and say "this is how many people you can fit in a COD match" or something to that effect. Then get 64 people to stand in the middle and say "this is how many people you can fit into a BF match". And finally fill the stadium with 1500-2000 (however many its going to be) people and say "and this is how many people that can fit into Planetside 2". Cue ingame action from the game. Just really hit home how many can play in a single area in this game. Thats my hugely expensive idea, anyone else got some? |

Great idea, but it can be done on the cheap. What might work best is using like a college basketball arena. Easier to get access to a college arena than some pro stadium, plus even 2000 people would look small in a stadium that usually holds 50-80k.
Then you'd only need like 16 people, then with some fancy editing, you could duplicate those 16 people to make it 64. Then for the final shot, you could use some stock footage of an full arena with the people cheering. Pretty much same result, but without having to wrangle a ton of extras, and not having to rent anything out. Killer concept. |

What I think would be cool is to have an adverts focus go from the scale of the single player, to a pair of players, a fire team, a squad, a pair of squads, a platoon and then have the entire battle line and army fighting, showing teamwork, tactics and strategy which is simply impossible for other games to pull off.

I'm thinking: start off with a close up of 1 guy, perhaps quick edits, his foot, him reload, then medium shot of him firing from behind cover. -Longer shot showing he is being attacked by 3 guys. -Back to close up on him running out of ammo (click, click), then pulls out his knife -Suddenly a squad of about 5 reinforcements come in and take out the 3 bad guys to save the day -Suddenly a tank shell goes off nearby. Cut to 2-3 enemy tanks attacking the squad. The tanks take out the squad of 5. -Just then 1 of the tanks explode. Troops w/ tanks look up to see some AV enemy on a ridge and they return fire. - AV soldiers on the ridge call for back up, cut to multiple aircraft coming directly over the ridge and taking out the other tanks and troops. - Cut to aircraft "Targets destroyed. Returning to base" - Aircraft start flying away when "Lock on" 1-2 of the aircraft get taken out by AA, and the lone survivor flies towards the base. -Camera pulls out to show base is under heavy assault from troops, tanks, and air. - Inception "bwaaammm" PlanetSide 2: Coming Soon I like to think of it as a twist on the really cool Nike World Cup Commercial "Write the Future" Could even use the same song, except probably the Gary Hooey version would work better. Harder guitar, no yoddle. The main concept is like what DviddLeff said. Start on showing the small scale and gradually work up to the massive epic scale of Planetside. This is just a rough idea for now. |

Whatever it is has to have the scale of the game as the main star of the show, yet be able to show what the average player can do and the difference they can make.
The combined warfare approach you mention is very similar to battlefield videos I have seen in the past, which show off the different options available to the player; we need to make sure that any videos show that its not just one tank, but ten Love the idea about the lone guy getting in trouble and could be done a number of way; a buggy falling back as bait to lure a tank into a squad of AV troops for example. Of it could be similar to the teaser we got; zoom in from orbit to individual troops and squads, then out and back in to other players as the battle unfolds. |
