In the MMORPG world, classes cannot have certain items, but you can always customize your layout with what you need and how you play with just the class constraint.

This reminds me too much of the hard layouts in all the other FPS's where you start with a layout, get certain amount of ammo, med kits, etc...
I never meant to imply that inventories had to be removed to make classes work, I was just using it to address boomers and further clarify another restriction on loadouts that will be present in the game.

I do sincerely hope that they aren't going to stick us with hard layouts like many FPS's have, but to think that inventories are needed to have loadout customization is crazy. There are tactical shooters that have no freeform inventory grid, but still let you customize your equipment loadout. Maybe we should ask the devs during next weeks Q&A, because it's my hope that loadouts will still be heavily customizable.

Would it really hurt the game if we could no longer pull a couple extra rifles out of our ass? As long as the game is balanced around no inventory space (Reloadable Decimator?) and as long as loadout customization is still robust, how much will actually be lost?

Some of the more creative, freeform inventory loadout variations will be lost. That sucks, but it won't hurt the overall game.

Now, limiting loadouts to predefined amounts of ammo, grenades, etc., that would certainly hurt the game. No argument from me.

I spent some time this holiday playing CoD with friends and family and it made me miss Planetside all the more and think about PS2.

The hard layout is meant for fast TTK games like this, but in an MMO you can stay alive a long time and survive because of your special gear. Think, that one extra health pack or jammer that let you escape... to find a term to hack or an AMS to resupply.

I'm hoping SOE gets this right and doesn't turn this more into CoD and remember the world is not just FPS, but also MMO where I don't want to die around every corner instantly. If the mission system does its job, then this will turn out good, and XP from missions will outshine killwhoring so they can turn down TTK.

When I'm playing planetside i wan't to play planetside , and i don't wan't to be playing cod or mw3 , where you have to choose you class each time you spawn , thanks but no thanks , i think there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Inventory in the original planetside , and if it aint broke don't fix it ! thats what makes planetside unique to other FPS games and if that feature has been changed to a similiar style to bf3 and cod mw3 i think that will wreck planetside 2 , for god sake i really hope i'm wrong i really do

All this class/inventory stuff has been discussed to death. Search the forums and gain understanding.

Or you could just keep on beating that long-dead horse. Up to you.

Some stuff, such as driver controlled main guns on tanks, the removal of freeform inventories, and the new class system, are here to stay. Some people may not like it, but it's not going to change.

Fortunately for me, none of it will ruin Planetside 2 for me. If it ruins it for anyone else, that's unfortunate, but it's still not going to change.

I'm sorry but a Tetris inventory mini-game is not what made Planetside a great unique game. In fact, one of the biggest gripes with Planetside now are the players that can do everything all at once. For example, we've all seen the mossie pilot that bails out over a tower geared up with HA, AV, Eng, Med. I'm glad they are adjusting the classes so you can still do all those things, just not carry them all at the same time.

On top of that, the inventory system in PS1 is clunky at best. Sure it's customizable, but there will be more than enough customization in PS2 to scratch that itch. Like Napalm said though, this has been discussed to death. In fact it was one of the first debates when the game was announced and they mentioned "classes".

And no, I'm not serious. But seriously speaking, from what we've seen so far, I'm already much more into Forgelight than into Frostbite.
Forgelight is a visual system. Frostbite on the other hand is a dedicated physics engine. To compare the to visually is like apples and oranges. To compare them physically would make Forgelight look bad and then people would kill you. I am glad PS2 looks so crisp and clean with wonderful reflections and lighting. I will hold out on my vote on the game physics until I see it in action though.

When I saw the thread title, I envisioned Scythes chasing an elusive generator through the sky...

That was mostly a joke anyways, however as far as I know, Forgelight is an engine just the same as Frostbite. It's more than just visuals, PS2 doesnt use Forgelight for visuals and like.. UE3 for the rest.

So arn't they pretty much the same kind of engines?

But I guess to be more correct I should've said I already like the looks of PS2 much better than BF3, if the engines arnt directly comparable.

Forglight incorporates Physx for its physics, Frostbite is a visual and physics engine.
So its not going to have bad physics, physx is used in major engines like Unreal, gamebryo and vision its in over 300 games....i think its pretty acceptable physics.
