I really had to laugh at this:

How do you feel the game will stand up against SOE’s revamping of PlanetSide and Red
5′s Tribes-like, Firefall? What is LoD doing that stands out?

Smart: Well, I have always felt that Planetside was a game that was well ahead of its time. Which IMO is the primary reason it didn’t do as well as it should have back then. When you’re competing with an industry in which the FPS genre is one in which you just buy the game and play it, a subscription based FPS game is more of a tough sell. That said, I don’t envision SOE straying too far from the original or they run the risk of alienating the core install base that are still playing it. As a result, my guess is that the game is probably going to be more of the same. If they do that, then they’re pretty much off my list of competitors because they won’t stand a chance against LOD. At all.

Sounds like he made that assumption a long time ago, I don't know if it's funny or sad that he thought SOE wouldn't stray too far from the original

Regardless, I don't know how that game could in his mind compete with PS2, I don't think it's just the fanboy in me that thinks it looks more like something from the era of Planetside 1. Then again as noted above, we could only judge the graphics.

Which were alredy a trick.
"features actutal assets and gameplay mechanics" is another way of saying "features assets that are not actually in the game" (As opposed to "consists entirely of ingame footage")

I actually liked nearly all the PS1 mechanics. Don't understand the apparent hate for them.
HART was good at keeping people from quickly jumping whereever they wanted, Rezing took time so people actually worried about dying, inventory let me play my way, etc.

As for Derek, I LIKE the concept for several of his games. Big open worlds FPS.

Hell, 3000AD Battlecruiser was awesome in idea. Massive seamless universe, control everything from a Carrier with fighters to running around on the ground with a gun and just about everything in between.
But the controls were so convoluted that I could barely tell what's what, there was so little in the universe to actually use all this shit on (I finally found a city on a planet, and the thing was empty. Just buildings) and it was buggy.

Big awesome ideas, just no idea how to implement them properly.

He is right about planetside 2 not being in the same league as his LOD...... It about 4 leagues higher already and its not even finished.

For what i see this LOD fails to even surpass what planetside currently is let alone used to be.

wow, the animations and soldiermodels suck hard ;-)
and the environment looks a little empty.

but this game seems to have some things we will miss in ps2...
vehicle enter animations, seamless transporterboarding/unboarding and spitfire turrets!

the trailer showed almost nothing that could stand up to planetside 2, so dereks statements are just pathetic ;-)

but it´s good to know that others try to make mmo-fps games as well, and maybe by the time soe screws up again there might be an alternative to run to.

Hey they got vehicle enter animations. Clearly LOD>PS2

It could have change. 3 years ago! When ppl were leaving ps they could hop on this (graphics arent that much important), but not now. Not when everyone is just waiting for PS2.

And it had one big flaw. Max lvl character with bought items is nearly unkillable by new player (they promote that like its a good thing), and they dare to compare to PS? HA HA HA.

I got the feeling watching the video for it and reading the FAQ for Line of Defense that the developers of the game clearly have no earthly idea how to compete with an MMOFPS like Planetside.

I don't even understand how this game would compete with Planetside 2? Graphics are worse, features are down right pathetic sounding, number of players and factions are lower (the former being absolutely abysmally lower), and over all the production quality of Planetside 2 is simply much better.

It just seems amazing to me that Derek Smart honestly believes his "game" will hold a candle to Planetside 2.

I'm almost certain Derek Smart has Aspergers, which means he is always right... among other things.
