Higby, Tray, and the rest of the PS2 dev team.

After spending the last few hours reviewing the collected GDC information, I wanted to get a community message out to the PS2 dev team.

I think you guys at SOE have been doing a wonderful job building our dream game thus-far. After having taken part in several gaming communities, and seeing many different launch preparations I usually find myself disappointed by the output of the crafters. Planetside live was a passion for a long time to everyone who peruses this forum, and I have yet to see a community more dedicated to their game than this one. With that said I want to thank Matt, and his team for all their diligent work to date. We have been tough on you, and some even criticize changes you guys have made, but just the limited progress we've seen from this GDC demo I can safely say I am very impressed by what is shaping.

It may not be the classic game or a revamp of the original but I feel that it is the right course of action, CoD complaints and Battlefield comparisons are going to happen because they are similar in genre and successful. Yet neither of those 2 games come close to the scale the SOE team has been developing. Adding those elements will hopefully draw die-hards away from those games, and I dont see why I shouldnt embrace these changes...

Long story short.

Matt and team. I want to personally thank you for all your hard work so far. I eagerly wait for a chance to try this myself. I'm sure this community agrees with me for the most part and I'd like to hear they're thoughts as well here.

While I agree with the sentiment.

Scale was not the only part of PS1 that made it unique. We also already have M.A.G.

True, M.A.G. does have similar elements... But the preformed teams and map size and round beginning / end style is dissimilar for the most part... I do like MAG but the persistent world of Planetside made for such an amazing leap. I cant off the top of my head think of a game even attempting something similar.

The game does look good, and i will play it.BUT you have killed the team play of PS1 and replaced it with super fast game play. That is all about kills and kill streaks. This quote from Higby said it all "We really wanted to make the mmo mechanics to be as light as possible for fps players to be able to just get into and be able to experience with out having to feel like they have a long learning curve " So we threw out game play and team play just to please the bf and cod players.Who will leave as soon as the new bf or cod comes out.
Like i said ,i will play and i guess i will have to live with it the way that the game is,but its free to play and i wont be paying a dime for anything. This is not the game i wanted.
Having said that, i still cant wait for beta

I want to strongly echo the sentiments of this thread, and I think it's a great idea that the OP made it. You guys are tirelessly supportive of us, and you deserve (and have) our immense gratitude.

What unbelievably unlikely cosmic dice-roll did we win to have the two most devoted designers working on the sequel to the game that we love the most.

Thank you.

The only game to date that is anything even CLOSE to how Planetside is, is World War Two Online, which was released BEFORE Planetside in 1999 or 2000. I too have followed this game and played since I was about 14. Sadly that game just isn't up to modern day standards even though its still being worked on and improved today. Just thought I would share that there is another game out there similar, but it just wont hold a stick to Planetside 2.

EDIT: Sorry for going OT there Hamma. =)

Great job Matt and team! You guys are doing a fantastic job. I will honestly admit to you that I have never wanted a single game so much in my life. I have never followed a game so closely in my 23 years of life. And I certainly have never seen a development team care so much about there community and its opinions.

Thanks again guys! We all look forward to having our hand in beta to play... errr help provide feedback =)

The game is gonna be fun. There is no doubt about that at all.I think what alot of people are worried about(myself included) is that will it truly be a Planetside 2 sequel though? That is what worries me the most. I will play the game because it is gonna be a fun game. And I think that is what the devs were really looking to build. A fun game. But I kinda feel that with any big news about PS2, it looses it's touch from the game we all love and adore. Some things are for the better but others just make me wonder why? In planetside kill cams weren't needed. All you had to do is pay attention. Why try to fix something that is not broken ?

OP signed.

thanks for all the hard work! keep it going and stay as awesome as you all are!
best game of all times has the best devs of all times! now that´s real luck!
i have participated in quite a few betas also, and this is the first beta i really enjoy even before it has let me into the game! no other game has such a fantastic symbiotic relationship between the devs and the community!

i will save my concerns about some changes for beta
the positive things i saw today are far bigger than the negative aspects.
