Ideally it would work in concert with the original voice macro system style of PS1. An example would be if your injured and aim at a medic and press a certain key you yell "MEDIC!!!" or something similar. As powerful as the original PS1 voice macro system was, there were times it felt cumbersome and slow to me. Both systems could complement each other nicely if designed well.
I would also like to see some humorous "automatic" (possibly have a toggle to turn it off if people really hate it) chatter among squadmates. Examples (notably lame examples at that, I'm not a writer):

TF2 has this type of stuff. Automatic thank-you's for your healer, and taunts for the people you've killed.
Not sure how that would work in Planetside, but I think it's an idea with some merit. |

I can see something like this getting annoying quick, although sometimes there's just so much going on that you really don't notice it or shrug it off.
I guess it depends on the consistency that they are played. Given the scope of PS2 and how many thousands of players there can potentially be hearing "NICE SHOT!!!" "TANGO DOWN!!" everytime someone kills another player could get really annoying. |

Tribes 2 and Left 4 Dead had powerful solutions for this - macros that adapted according to what they were aimed at at the moment.
Tribes 2's solution was integrated with the on-board mission system so you'd point your laser tagger at a friendly tower and after a half second of lazing it would voice "repair our turret!", tag the turret with an icon and add a mission objective. All automated, very slick. The same idea for an enemy turret only there it had an added benefit of lazing the target for bombardment - so a mortar heavy would get a nice, easy to use "aim here" reticle on his hud. L4d has automated thank-yous and also an adaptive spotting announcer. Oh, Tribes:Ascend has a nice "enemy spotted" sort of voice macro which adapts to location in the map as well as armor type - sort of "Heavy near our base!". It also tags the target momentarily for all to see. I guess this would have to be limited to squad communications and the like ... making things global will probably drive us all insane |

I agree that T2 L4D and Tribes: Ascend did it quite nicely. Personally i would also like to hear some "fluff" chatter. Best example would be BF3, thou it should be done smartly. Have 20 guys in a corridor and a grenade rolls in, instead of getting voice spam of "HOLY FUUUUU GRENAAADE!!" from 20 people, just the nearest person should shout.
Also i think it could be an idea to keep this "fluff" chatter clientside. It's actually quite easy to find people in BF3, just chuck a grenade and listen for the yelling . |
