I think it would be cool if when the turret is unmanned, it looks just like that. But when you take control of the turret, Shields appear at the sides of the turret to protect the operator from fire, there could be a gap in the middle to keep the user from being headshotted, or it could envelope the front half of the turret almost entirely and leave the operator only vulnerable from the back/partly the sides. (I'd assume the shield would be slightly dome-shaped.) It could either block damage entirely, or could be destructible after enough fire, that then leaves the operator able to be killed directly. But if they're untouched for a short while they recharge like the old Field Turrets or our own shielding. You could destroy the turret itself by just shooting the turret, or try to beat through the shields to kill only the operator.
Or it could have different defensive measures per Empire. VS get the shield (But more stylized towards the VS, Hex shaped or sharp/scale-like shield effects), TR could get some kind of rounded bullet-resistant glass, and the NC could have the oldschool armor plates. |

As a sniper I agree with the need for a bullet shield, it will be too easy to kill them otherwise. Also I agree with the footprint being too small, my brain was just hammering away about how top heavy it was. But that's just one of those engineering things, like how the antenna on the C4 looks more like a microphone receiver than anything you'd actually want or need for explosives, could easily fit a good sized antenna inside the case attached to the explosive.

I think this is just to show us what the gun looks like. The current manned turret that an advanced engineer can deploy in PS1 has an enclosed cage for the operator and it is protected by a shield like a vehicle and regenerates. It fires like an unmanned turret Phoenix turret in a base, but with a narrower cone of fire. It can take out wounded vehicles before its own shields go down and two or more in cross-fire can be deadly. The problem is, it can only deployed outside of a friendly SOI and not within range of other deployable turrets or TRAPs. If you do not man them after a set period of time, they deconstruct.
I believe it has been stated that the turrets in PS2 will come in AI and AV and possibly AA versions. |

the turret should have a red laser, and say "i see you!"
I love turrets, the ammount of time i spent on TF2 just spacking my wrench against them while i rocked the kill count. Be interested to see how these are implimented. What are the specifics? Could theoretically 20 engineers put them guarding a door, and once theyre killed all continue the fight themselves?

Now that I think about it, no gun shield could make sense if you can put down turrets inside a base. Think about it, if an engineer puts down this turret in a hallway, and the turret has fast TTK, wouldn't you want at least some vulnerabilities?

Actually if you think about it, we would be in a society with clones and respawns where soldiers are a dime a dozen. Everything is throw away and a bullet shield would be seen as a waste of resources. (an in character explanation)
So I can see a commander tell a grunt to run out there, set up this gun and spam bullets till you die. /Cline playing the devil's advocate role |
