ie Warpgate bottom left of map, that faction will always be attacking North & East. One of PS1's strengths was the change of warpgate links between conts. offering different prespectives of advance.
Constantly attacking from North to South on Solsar got stale but the gate-swap flipped this totally offering a new perspective to the same cont. (ie a good thing)

That's not necessarily true. If each foothold has a warpgate beam at the center then it's possible you could be able to warp to a different warpgate on the cont and attack from there. My guess is there will be no fixed intercont-lattice so all warpgates could be Broadcast.

This would allow the empire in the bubble to shoot out but not be shot at. Of course there would have to be a lot of cover outside the bubble, so you could potentially keep an empire trapped in their bubble. The empire in the bubble could still shoot out and kill enough enemies outside of the bubble to push out.

This is how I'm guessing footholds will work. So they'd behave lik Sanc gates that you could shoot out of to discourage enemy camping.
