There are 3 continents slated for launch with 2000 players on each, meaning each server will likely hold 6000 players. However, there were 8000 people watching TB's stream during E3. If most of them will be playing, that is still a small portion of the total audience who will want to play a F2P MMOFPS when it first comes out. We know there will be multiple servers, but will there be enough? I'm really unsure. It sounds crazy, but a free game like this could blow up so easily.

It's a good sign to see people worry about too many players instead of too little. Keep it up devs.

Most games that do fantastically at launch are overwhelmed by the sheer number of people logging into their servers (looking at you Diablo). I think launch will have the usual problems, but they have the tech to handle the server loads. It's kind of their thing haha

Make sure that the servers can handle 50,000 people at launch, scale it up asap if required or scale it down after a few weeks to meet demand.

In this instance as I'm sure SOE is aware it is always best to over prepare.

I think the server load will be manageable if they do the beta stress tests right. It'll just be strange if the servers are completely packed for a while. Unless they decide to add in more continents or raise the player cap.

my concern with server sizes is that with the pure awesomeness that is PlanetSide 2 there will in all likelyhood be multiple servers for each region. I can see scenarios where outfits that had been duking it out with each other for over 9 years in original game are now playing on seperate servers in PS2. Certainly not the end of the world, but still kinda sad imho.

I'd suggest they do an open beta for a week or two. It would give them a definite answer to the number of people interested. Its better to have server problems during a beta.

No. There will be crashes, Server locks, netcode malfunctions and much lag. It will be as unplayable as PS1 is now.

I thought each server was locked at 2000 people spread across each continent (666 each)? I guess the word "battlefield" is kind of vague. :/

If they don't have enough servers, they'll get more servers.

It's a good thing this thread was made to bring it to their attention.

No, they've been pretty clear. Battlefield refers to continent. There are currently 3 continents which will be accessible from a server.

666 players per empire on a continent, three empires on a continent.

Every PC game I have ever played had the inevitable first day crashes and wait times and more crashes and 52000 I quit playing and this game is fail threads. I love reading the firestorm that is on the forums with all the little cry babies who want the game and want it now and the devs suck and SOE sucks and all the fun that is first day blues.

First day is always so awesome. I get more entertainment from the forums on the first day because I generally can't get in the game till day two or three. I can't wait for first day blues.
