In the fictional world of Planetside where the logistics burden is incredibly lessened by having weapons and ammunition manufactured on the front lines by nanites, standardization for the sake of logistics carries little weight.
Well certain calibers are useful in certain types of weapons depending upon the necessity of stopping power, low recoil, rounds-per-magazine etc. There's a reason you don't see 50 caliber rounds in SMGs or 22 caliber rounds in LMGs.

But I agree, standardization doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the PS universe where ammunition for a specific weapon can be magicked up on the spot.

More ammo types means more programing to construct them.

PS1 had standard and AP 9mm rounds, specific types of AV rounds, standard and AP shotgun rounds, sniper rifle rounds, and batteries for the VS weapons.

As for caliburs, what are you people nuts? 9mm by todays standards doesn't have to look like a 9mm round 600+ years in the future. Same general size and shape but the rounds have to be designed to pierce the advanced armor that every soldier in the battlefield wears. There were .50 caliber musket balls and now there are .50 caliber bullets.

The calibur doesn't do much but determine the over all mass of the bullet. The detenation charge might not be gunpowder, it might be some other form of explosive. Hell maybe the rounds are fired using C4 charges instead of gunpowder, or some other stable explosive.

Maybe the guns operate using an electric charge to fire the projectiles. The entire mechanics behind the weapon could be completely different but it doesn't mean that the calibur of the bullet HAS to be different as well. Maybe 9mm is just easier to carry because it's smaller, and the technology behind the firearm means that the smaller bullet can do a lot more in 600 years then it can today.

C4 however represents a specific chemical compound. And as another poster pointed out, the Boomer was designed specifically to replace C4 because C4 was proving inadequate to destroy the higher grade materials being used in PS1.

I wish someone could figure out how to destroy the higher grade materials that the trees were made out of... Come to think of it I believe they figured out a way to harvest those trees and build bases out of them.
I agree with you 100%, again. I don't understand the logic barrier on this subject or why it is an issue at all.

also, +1 on the tree idea

However in PS2 they realized that they could have 4 times the number of soldiers on the field if they only provided them with papertanks and paperarmor so now they could downgrade to the old cheaper C4 as well since papertanks aren't sturdy enough to deflext a C4 blast! That is a win-win scenario! This is capitalism at its finest!

Mind you the MAS looked like a dildo.

MAS's don't appear to be back in PS2 either. Shame, I got pretty anal (er....no pun intended ) about trying to work out good base grids for 'em in PS1. Another very undervalued tool frankly!

Blimey my old thread still exists, you'd think SoE would clean their forums a bit. Oh but they did censor it for no good reason.

Yeah calling it C4 is pretty unimaginative considering the game has dead aliens.

Why not C5-9?

C4 is old by our 21st century standards, and yet 400 years later on a distant planet in an unknown galaxy we're still using it?!

BOOOOOOO!!

We need a petition!

Get signatures girls, and get a free slap on the backside!

I'll never use the term boomer for a specific reason.

Taking image from an older post.

Except if someone's fun is to place bomb on himself and blow up next to someone, which then bring horde of enemy trying to eat you... no. Never going to use that term for anything else.

PlanetSide coined the term YEARS before L4D. Just sayin'.

I was under this impression. I remember devs saying that infil+LA get c4 while engies get boomers.

Feel free to correct me on this one.
