Lyrics can work but you need specific video, and a lot of transitions.
Specific video: If a lyrical song slows down to something more personal, you don't wanna have guys shooting dudes in the background, you want the video to compliment the current mood of the music.
Transitions: Transition to the beat now and then. Use dissolve or fade to black and back into a new clip. If you want an example, watch Red Vs Blue Season 10 Preview Trailer. I'll give ya the youtube link, cuz I dunno how to link vids in this forum.
You notice how every 1 or 2 lines of lyrics they change the clip to something cool or relivant to the lyrics? At the 53rd second the guy says, "Family First," and they show the team together if you needed an example. You also noticed that near the end they just made the screen go black several times while the music hit a kind of climax. It's silly but it keeps your attention don't it?
If you don't want a Lyrical song but want something epic for background music, check out Two Steps From Hell. A good one for trailers is Heart Of Courage, but Sons Of War is fun too. Will link those if you interested.
