In game sounds and their importance

How many of you really pay attention to the sounds in the game?

For me they are very important. Especially when working alone behind the lines when I'm up against one or two guys on my own.

Often when approaching an enemy tower I wait before starting the door hack. You'll be able to hear people using the spawn tubes or reloading weapons from just outside the door. This is very important for deciding when to hack. If you haven't noticed already, you can also hear REKs being used from quite a distance away. When defending I'm always listening for REKs. You can even hear them being used one or two floors above or below you.

When alone and hacking a tower I listen for the sound of the spawn tubes and if I hear one suddenly operate I will sometimes cancel the hack and take up a defensive position until I hear the person leave. This all depends of course on what level of threat I feel that I am in and how far along the hack is.

Cloakers can often be heard before seen. As long as there isn't a lot of weapons fire going on, footsteps are very audible. So is changing over from a REK to a pistol.

When I hear a spitefire I run in that direction. Sometimes it will stop as soon as the enemy takes cover. If you look at the spitefire it will still be facing in the direction of the previous threat, which can give away enemy trying to hide.

Every vehicle or weapon gives off a distinct sound which really helps you decide what weapon to grab before going out to engage them. Even when down in a bases spawn tubes you can hear the action on top and pick out different weapons from their sounds.

I wear headphones when playing and I think it really helps with the situational awareness. Just curious how important are the sounds for the rest of you.

The lack of sound from a Reaver is a rather glaring problem.

yesterday was one of the most suspenseful things i did I went to this VS tower started hacking the door as i was almost done i heard a MAX soldier i finished as soon as possible and stayed exactly next to the door lock the MAX opened the door stood exactly where he was when he got the door open stayed there for about 7 seconds before he started walking away i had one gun out didn't even think about putting it away he started running off in the distance as i ran inside the door before he turns around or someone sees me out there i thought i was dead.

If you haven't yet... turn off the background music... it allows you to hear sounds you never thought were there!

Sound is increadibly essintial, cloackers can be easily heard when they cloak, and so can weapon changes/vechile sounds.

Footsteps are audible? I can barely hear my own when there is absolutely nothing going on.

Couldn't agree with you more. I turned the music off after the first day. You miss a lot of clues when a lot of the sounds are drowned out by the background music. I'd say turning off the music has actually saved me from being killed numerous times.

I like the music. Good way to tell where you are, if the base is hacked, if your speakers are still plugged in.....No seriously, i have a problem with my sound card were if it goes quite for to long it will just start screaching. Kinda hard to hear anything after that.

What i hate is when my brother turns on MP3's. That music serves no point.

Absolutely, especially with audio amp turned on.

Try turning off music and turning up the 3D sound level a bit. Also, the different sound codecs for me give radically different performance and levels of sound subtlety - using Direct3D Hardware Support I can hear footsteps very distinctly.

Ahh... I have always been using Aureal 2.0 or whatever. And I have not had the music on since way before beta ended, that got tiring kind of fast :x

Bring the <3 of the PS music straight to your outfit's voicechat.

Also, if your sound card permits...turning your sound from software emulation to 3d hardward sound increases the quality and accuracy of the sounds.
