Well, in the early beta I tried playing this game on 56k, it was great until im in a base with 100 people and the game wont work, doors, terminals and even my gun dont seem to work, so i decided to not play it until i get high speed.
I got DirecWay satellite internet and the first thing i did was try bf1942, turns out since my signal goes to space and back, the best ping i can have is 800. So now i have a slow connection with the biggest bandwidth ever and no games seem to work with it. I payed $2000 for the satellie and will pay $1000/year for this satellite and its not apparently until the late future , there is absolutely no other form of high speed (except for microwave signals that people are starting to use, but a hill blocks the tower from my place). This f*cking sucks. If someones in the same situation, with satellite internet that downloads fast but has slow ping, and still have managed to play planetside, please let me know. I don't want to try it myself because i don't really want to buy this game if its just not going to work. |

Some research might have been in order. I think the general consensus on satellite is that it sucks balls for games.

Hello,
How far out are you? It sounds like you are pretty far away from a major city based on your limitations. For the money you are paying, I'd check into ISDN or a fractional T1 frankly. Satellite is never good for gaming, and anyone who gave you that advice should be shot. Talk to your phone company and other companies like Quest about a dedicated local loop to your house. It might be expensive, but it would do what you want. From your post it sounds like you are serious enough about your connection to consider paying the cost. When I get my house built, we will be putting in a fractional T1. It will be a business "expense." /snicker ;-) |

I've been playing on 56k and yes it does get a little rough sometimes.
Satellite SUCKS for gaming though, and you really should have done research before dumping that much money into it. Think of how far the information has to go... all the way up into space and back down. Planetside should be quite playable with an 800 ping though... all that REALLY matters in it is bandwidth, since the hit detection is done clientside. It should still be better than 56k.
