No, you can't shoot anyone in America unless they pose serious threat to you or someone else life or wellbeing. That means, if a guy comes at you with a tire iron, you can shoot him. If a guy breaks into your house, you can shoot him, if a guy is robbing someone else at knife/gun/whatever point, you can shoot him. These are not hard and fast rules however, and sometimes people do get charged with manslaughter or some such thing.

Actually there really is no set law for self defence in America. It's going to vary from state to state rather widely.

On an interesting side note Colorado has a make my day law, it states that you can shoot anyone you feel is a threat to yourself OR your property.

The joke aorund here is if you shoot someone outside drag them inside so the MAke my Day law Aplies
