Do what i do when PS doesnt run properly on my machine.

Kick it, Threaten it (With or without Axe is optional)

Works fine for me

Planetside is the queen ram whore of all the ram whores in the hole of the ram whore worlds, or something.

My mobo will only take 512 megs, but I could upgrade from 133mhz RAM to 266mhz for about ~$50.

A GeForce FX 5200 256MB is listed at $78.50 on pricewatch, and the RADEON 9200 256MB is $91.

What will give me the most bang for my buck? Faster RAM, or for 2x the cost a better vid card (than my current GeForce2 MX400 64MB).

Ok Fenrys, dumping money into ram and video into your system is a real waste. You could spend a cpl hundred trying to get a little ram and minor improvement on video... but its only going to be a bandaid for the problem.

My suggestion to you... sell that junker. Find someone who needs a machine for their kid, or grandparent, or a linux box or something. Get as much as you can for it, $100-$150 hell $200 if you can squeeze them for it. Maybe even switch out the video card and keep yours and find some 8-16 meg vga card that will suit their needs. Then take that money, and the cpl hundred or so you would spend up minor upgrades and buy a decent starter system or build your own. You will come out with 10x more pc and a system that you can actually upgrade as time goes by without having to pay for out of date junk.

the good thing about AMD is you can usually upgrade, cept for the 64 bit ones.
you have SDRAM which pretty much sux, also your vid card needs a proper burial.
an AMD 1.4 ghz should be the equal of a 2.0 pentium. if you can afford it get a mobo that supports DDR and at least 512 MB of it. also an FX5200 would be enough.
I have a P4 2.4, dual DDR 266, and a GF4 MX 440 and PS runs smooth on it. since you don't get much improvement from dual DDR on AMD systems I suggest getting the RAM in one stick.

this solution is quite expensive though, about $300 if I'm not mistaken, don't know the prices where you live. if you can't afford it go for a vid card, more RAM, and buy a non integrated sound card, since integrated sound uses the CPU. also configure you virtual memory to always be at least one gig and set the max to even higher, cause windows probably increases/decreases it during gameplay causing you a slow down.
