Chapter 14: Discovery
"Yeah, this place seems a tad eery," responded Maverick. "Well, we gotta keep moving. What other choice do we have?" replied Bismarck. The party moved deeper into the cave, and clutched their weapons as the light became dimmer and dimmer. Finally, as the light completely faded away, they saw a rather dull fluorescent bulb hanging a few feet in front of them. "Someone put that there," said Lance in an ominous tone. The group continued to find more and more bulbs hanging from the ceiling. After walking for about 20 minutes, the group suddenly came to a rusty, heavy-looking door. After whispering to his comrades, Lance decided to give the door a sturdy tug. As expected, it wouldn't budge. "Well, I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this," said Neo as he reached into his backpack. Before any of the others could protest, he stuck a boomer on the door and, after shoving everyone backwards, detonated it. As the smoke cleared from the explosion, Neo smiled as the door was now 10 feet into the next room. "Let's hope no one heard that," said Lance in a half sarcastic tone. The group crept in to a stunning sight. The group was bathed in artificial light as they stepped into a gigantic room, similar in appearance to that of an interlink facility lobby. All of them gasped at the sight of gargantuan monitors and control panels, as well as 4 generators, each powering this mammoth of a room. As they recovered from the shock of this drastic change in scenery, they surveyed the room. It appeared to be deserted. 'Odd,' thought Lance. "Why would no one be here? And what's the purpose of this place?" Lance thought aloud. "I was wondering the same question, Air Captain." Lance felt a gun barrel press against the back of his head. "Hello, again," said Exarkun. "Guns on the floor, and hands up." Lance and his group obliged and turned to see Exarkun and 10 other Vanu, their guns pointed at him. "You proved to be quite a resourceful soldier back on the galaxy. A soldier like you could do wonders for the Sovereignty. Plus, you seem to have led us to this interesting place. Now if you'll quietly come along with me..." But he was cut off in mid sentence by the opening of a door on the far side. "What the hell?! Intruders?!" came the voice of a startled NC soldier. The Vanu turned their guns on him, but Exarkun ordered them to hold their fire. Suddenly a squad of NC emerged from the doors. "Dammit, Rogers, what the hell is so important?" 50cent trailed off in mid sentence as he gazed at the 5 Terrans and a squad of Vanu behind them. "What the shit???" "Ah... So you're in charge of this place eh Aaron?" "Exarkun... what are you doing here and with- ARGH! You're still alive!???!" "Lance gave 50cent a smirk. "Ok general. We've only come down here to retrieve these prisoners. We simply followed them after they bailed out of our galaxy. If you'll be as kind to allow us passage out of here, we'll take these Terrans off your hands and move along in a peaceful manner," said Exarkun. "Ha! You expect me to let you and your vagabonds out of here scot free, knowing the location of this place?! Besides, I want the Terrans for myself!" "Well then Aaron, I guess I have no other option..." "FIRE!" The Vanu soldiers began blasting away at the unsuspecting Conglomerates. "SHIT! RETURN FIRE NOW!" 50cent dove behind a barrel, while his squad engaged the enemy. Lance and his comrades meanwhile dove for cover. Lance slid behind a box just as jackhammer fire pelted the ground. Kelly, Bismarck and Maverick each made it to a bunker as well. While running, Neo tripped and was trapped in the crossfire. Hitman turned around and picking up a jackhammer from a fallen soldier, began pumping away at both forces, until he worked his way to Neo, now clutching his leg in pain. Lance, Bismarck, Kelly and Hitman began firing at both sides, trying to provide cover for Maverick and Neo to safely make it back to them. Hitman hoisted Neo onto his shoulders and began sprinting for the bunker. But his speed was not enough and he was brought down in a hail of gunfire. "NOOOOOOOOO!" screamed Lance as he watched Neo try in vain to scramble to cover, and be torn apart by the crossfire. Hitman, watching the death of his friend, became enraged, and despite his numerous gunshot wounds ran full speed towards the bunker, firing with two weapons at both sides. He was able to escape into the safety of the bunker, but not without taking many wounds. The 5 remaining Terrans peaked out to see how the battle was going. The New Conglomerates were being reinforced, while the Vanu only had Exarkun and 4 other soldiers left. It was then that Lance spotted the doorway behind the Conglomerates' position. He signaled to his comrades on what he was about to do, and while Maverick fired cover fire, Lance threw a jammer at the nearby power switch. Immediatley the brightly lit room became completely dark. Lance knew some soldiers would turn on darklight, so he threw more jammers into the now blind group of soldiers. Knowing that his group were now the only ones who could see, Lance began crawling towards the door. He could feel the heat of random lasher shots scorching past him. Finally his group reached the door, and dove in just as the power was restored. Kelly locked it shut with her REK, and the group, after securing the perimeter, slumped to the wall to assess their condition. "Whew, we made it," said Maverick. "Yes, but Neo did not..." It appeared that Maverick, Kelly and Bismarck were both ok. Lance had sustained a shot to the arm, but was able to move about as normal. Hitman, however, was riddled with shots and his eyes were closed tight in pain. "Damn. We have to find a medical terminal for Hitman!" "Or... we can use this!" said Kelly as she pulled out a damaged medical applicator, apparently looted from the battle that was taking place in the next room. "Good thinking!" Hitman, near the point of losing consciousness, was able to hold on for a few more minutes as Kelly guided the applicator over his many wounds, until finally he was back to a fighting state. "We better find somewhere to hide until this battle has died down," said Bismarck. "Here." Lance pointed to a utility closet down the corridor. Making sure no surveilance equipment was nearby, the 5 remaining adventurers filed in to the closet, and were for the first time in 3 weeks, safe for the time being. |

Chapter 15: Doomsday
"Well what do we do now?" asked Lance. "I reckon we should wait till their fight is done before moving," said Maverick. "I wonder how it's going outside..." In the next room, bullets were continuing to fly everywhere. Vanu reinforcements had arrived, as had New Conglomerates, continuing to escalate the battle. Exarkun made sure that lasher orbs spammed by everywhere, giving the Vanu an edge of the lash damage. But just as the battle seemed to be going the Vanu's way, 50cent called in his MAX corps. 5 Scattercannon maxes and 3 Falcons appeared out of the doorway. Immediately, the Vanu switched to their Lancer's, but this allowed the remaining NC soldiers to pick them off easily with their Gauss rifles. As their numbers dwindled, the Vanu began to retreat into the next corridor, but Jackhammer surge troops pressed in on them. "RETREAT NOW!" yelled Exarkun. As he turned to flee a piece of buckshot hit him in the shoulder and a guass bullet nailed him in his kneecap, exploding it. He collapsed to the ground, appearing to be deadmeat. "Don't worry sir!" yelled one of the few maxes left, as he grabbed the general and switched on autorun. Exarkun was able to escape the cave, along with only a handful of other men. Outside a fresh galaxy was waiting for them. They dove in and immediately took off, jackhammer pelletse ringing off the side of the hovercraft. "Damn that was close..." said Exarkun as he nursed his wounds. The Conglomerates, after briefly celebrating their victory, then realized that they had no clue where the Terrans were. "Damn them," snarled 50cent. "Search the area! Make sure they don't get to the room. Soldiers knocked open the door to the closet where they were hiding, but they had already taken flight. Lance and his crew crept through the corridors, and finally arrived at a simple door. "I guess we should go in..." After hacking the ID friendly system, they crept silently into the room. They were surprised to see only a table with a portfolio laying on it. Lance picked it up and began perusing it. Suddenly his eyes nearly popped out of his head. His gaze turned to disbelief and shock. He pressed on, and when finished dropped the papers numbingly to the ground. "I don't believe it..." "What bud?" asked Maverick. "They have... some satellite that they've secretly put into orbit. It has the power to fire an orbital strike half the size of Forseral. They have the power to destroy our homes!!!" Lance stammered. The faces of his friends turned to dull slates of disbelief. "It says that theres a fortified outpost on Cyssor Mountain. Apparently they had to get close enough to the sky to launch it, and the mountain was the only suitable place. Oh no... IT SAYS THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN A WEEK!!!!" "Oh shit..." But the group had no more time to talk as an out of breath soldier stormed in. "Damnit," squeeked the soldier as he was obliterated by Hitman and Maverick. "They know we're here. We have to escape quickly and get back to the Terran sanctuary," announced Hitman. "Right. Let's go." |
