Usefulness of shotguns?

Just a question, but whats the use of a shotgun? I mean if 90% of the combat's going to be outdoors, how are you going to do anything shooting at someone with a shotgun 100 meters away from you. Sure you could rush them, but what chances do you have of making it to anyone in a large battle? Or in a small battle? I'd imagine a couple assault rifle troopers could take him out before he could get a shot in at close range.
They've had to already have explained this, otherwise they're specifically for indoor sweeps. Because to get to indoors, you have to go a long way in the outdoors.
Also, theres been no distinction in the jackhammer and the flechette rifle that I know of. Which has the advantage in which situation?
Maybe someone already said that you can have the pellets stay closer together for long range shots or something?

Shotguns are useful at long range, just not as useful as at close. There are tighter chokes for long range. If you're thinking about the NC they have the Gauss rifles options as well, plus all other gen pool options. I like their weaponry the best as it lends itself to the most damage.

Since I'm probably going to be using that weapon I've been keeping track of most of what has been said about it. First off, the Jackhammer is basically going to be an auto-shotgun w/ the special ability to fire all of its rounds at once as a secondary mode. Flechette rifle, I'm guessing, is going to be closer to a pump shotgun but I may be wrong.

The accuracy of shotguns is apparently much greater than the accuracy that most people have come to expect from them in other games. Also, if I remember correctly slugs will be available to put in them which increases their range greatly. If you haven't already sent in your questions you should probably ask a question about that so we could get a more specific answer. I would, but I've already turned mine in.

Little corection, it can fire all four barrels at once, not it's whole ammo load.

Second realize that the NC do have an assault rifle, and it looks like a pretty good one too because it does more damage per shot, so with a range implant you could sort of snipe with it.

As for the Flechette/Jackhammer, just look at the description. The Flechette is a shotgun, the Jackhammer is an assault shotgun with multiple barrels.

And remember with reinforced armor a NC could carry the Gauss for long rang stuff, and a Jackhammer for medium to close range stuff.

I don't think it would help too much having two infantry weapons when a buggy or a tank comes, or any aircraft.

I have real doubts that 90% of pside combat will be exterior, considering the fact that every single objective in the game is inside a building.

Quite true, but you have to GET THERE first. The group that can intercept hostiles before they get into a base in the first place will have a huge advantage over the one that has to dig the attackers out of their own base.

A big part of interception will be detection... scouts. Lonewolfs quite possibly, although ones that have to be willing to report what they see (as opposed to some schmoe that just wants to be a l33t 5n1p3r).

And if you can hit a convoy on the way in, you'll get a crack at their AMS while it's on the move, before it can cloak. Killing AMSes will be key to defeating attacks. No reinforcements = no chance.

All very true, but there are a lot of bases, and you may or may not encounter resistance on the way to your target. It is more assured that you will face indoor combat trying to hold the objective once it's taken, even if the base was deserted when you got there.

There will definately be a lot of outdoor combat, and for that an assault rifle is better than a shotgun. However, there will always be a significant amount of indoor fighting, where the shotgun is teh pwnzr

don't forget, the vanu have a area effect type of weapon (lasher) which is somewhat similar to the shotgun and TR have the minigun which i would imagine suck trying to hit something a good range away (while not final, they have said that the longer you hold trigger down, the larger the cone of fire becomes). unless TR are some type of strength god, the recoil will throw any accuracy off when fired at a distance.

It all depends on the spread of course. The pellet spread for shotguns in some fps's is way exagerated.

defending the base during the hacking countdown would be made a hell of a lot easier with a shotgun.

Why not get a rifle and a shotgun?

For base defense, assault rife and shotgun would be the best option. The rifle to gun them down from a distance if you see them coming, the shotgun to get them the hell out if they get in.

The Jackhammer may not work well against an aircraft, but if you unload all the barrels you could probably destroy a buggy and do a good bit of damage to a tank if they don't get you 1st.
