I live in israel so for me it's not an "IF". I have feared the army until a bit over a year ago, but there is no chance in hell I'm avoiding it. I'm 17, the draft is at 18-18.5 usually. there is no way in hell I'm avoiding it. my fear was simple, I thought I can't handle it. luckily, our army is smart enough to send 11th graders to mini bootcamp for 5 days to see what it's like, and I realized that I have what it takes to make a grade A soldier.
for all those afraid, there is no reason to be, modern armies are mostly non-combatant. victories are won through good logistics. a single F-15 needs a crew of dozens. those people need facilities which require more people. my personal goal is probably a pilot, one of the hardest and definately the most respected job in the israeli army. I have the mental abilities, no physical problems, it's down to pure will for me.

I would probably be a pilot for an unmanned recon drone. I know it would be pansy, but i'd kick ass at that. i couldn't be a sniper because of the extreme mental, phychological, and physical stress you go through. You have the power to end someones life in one shot, i couldn't pull the trigger. Also, isn't the Israeli air force and intelegence agency the best in the world?

yeah, those UAV's are definately a tough goal. there are 2 pilots, the takeoff and landing pilot who does just that, take off and land the plane. these guys, at least here, are chosen from a large group of R/C plane fans who have to fly an R/C plane and perform a number of tricks while talking to 2 people at the same time.
the second pilot sits in a room with all the equipment and flies it using the onboard camera(s). in israel they are chosen from those who drop out of pilot school after being in it for at least a year (the whole thing use to be 2 years and is now 3 cause you get a degree). btw, americans bring their UAV's here for repairs. we are #1 at making those.

I'm not sure how it all works, but if I knew I was going to be drafted, I would probably enlist in the air force and hopefully go to training to be a pilot. Not a fighter pilot, those guys go to school for years and are highly decorated, something which I would probably not have the dedication for. I would like to fly a C-5, or C-17.
