There has been a popular rumor going around that the release date is August 3rd, 2004. However, this has not been confirmed by Activision and is therefore not considered by the Index and most publications as a legitimate fact.

Its more than a rumor, the facts are we will have Doom 3 before August 12th which only leaves August 3rd.
