Jaged's answer is correct also.

Both ropes each have a total burn time of 60 min but each have different burn rates.

Since both have the same burn time, burning one completely (60 min) and by quartering (fold rope in half then fold one of the halfs, mark the quarter length) the second one and burning to the quarter mark (15 min) will still give the total burning time of 75 min.

this is true, but smaug used the entire length of the rope, making it the better answer.

(use of all avaliable resources)

also, jaged's marking method introduces error to the timing.

Actually the total burn time on my solution, is 45 minutes. The first 30 minutes of the 45 minute rope are burning simultaneously with the 30 minute rope.

true, rope two burnt half way in the time it took rope one to burn completely, 30 mins. Then the other half of rope two burnt away in 15 mins. Not matter how you look at it, total time is only 45 mins.

Now, if you lay the ropes at right angles to eachother with the end of rope two making contact a quarter of the way up rope one (measured by folding rope one in fourths). Then light the short end of rope one. Rope one will burn for 15 mins before the flame ignites the end of rope two. Rope two will then burn the last 60 mins while rope one burns out. Using all your resources and nothing more.

Not sure if this violates the whole "linear" burning thing, but it's the best I can think of.

It does violate it. A quarter of the rope is not neccesarily a quarter hour.

Then how'd they get past the first one by folding the rope in quarters to burn for 45 mins?

Because in the first one, it was linear. The conditions in this quizzle are different.

The difference is that both ropes do not have the same burn rate but the burn rate would be linear for each individual rope. The important clue is that both ropes have a total burn time of 60 min.

I would have gotten invoved with this thread earlier, but I was at work. Me and the other engineers were out back smoking rope, and balancing coins on our nipples.

so, let me get this straight, the ropes but the same amount of time if you burn them from end to end or if you light the entire thing on fire at once?

I'm confused, I think I'm over thinking this I think

I think I need to go to bed
