I think we'd have to rule out "going to conventions" as one of the factors of being a nerd. I say this because I coordinate a Planetside "convention" and am making it an annual thing.

Well I lack real social skills, but I'm funny enough to get by with it. So I classify myself as a dork, because I focus heavily on things outside of computers (music is a specific one), I clean myself, SHAVE, do my hair, and actually care about my clothes...
