Someone pass me the universal translator!

I think you'll find (if you visit the Europe servers,
and possibly the Eastern US one) that most communication
will be in English. There are too many languages around
here (I'm Swedish) to use our native tongues,
and most of us aquire proficiency at written English in school.
(Some ascending beyond the level of the average
online Ami, whom usually can't spell that well.)
We won't achieve the same level in spoken English,
but only our squad ("Outfit" in PS) mates will ever know that =)

Personally I prefer English over our scandinavian languages,
and will rather converse in that language than attempt
to understand the language of Danish or Finnish neighbours

(Norwegian is acceptable, though)

Go to Ultima Online. They have one built in for a ton of languages. It is a quite interesting feature.
