In a way I guess it can be seen as sort of cheap, but if players want it, it creates revenue, why not? And let's face it. Majority of big games so far have done it ("pre order this super deluxe pack now that costs 3 times more to get beta access as a freebie!").
Hell, just do it that way. Sell us collectors editions with some fancy crap with it and a beta access, no one will complain I would love to be subbed to Planetside, but even if I love the game I know I would only occasionally pop in, but being a poor student atm I really can't afford having a 15€ sub running for just to play a few times a months, so I'm even sorta taking the risk of screwing up my chances for beta by not being subbed. I would pay 15€ for a beta access in a heartbeat, but 15€ a month for an undefined time that may not even guarantee me the beta access? Can't afford

honestly i dont find it cheap selling a a collectors edition with beta access, they can tie it in with their F2P model by saying you get "elite soldier status" or some shit that gives a bonus. Hi Rez has the elite soldier style stuff with Global Agenda, and are doing it with Tribes. It's a source or revenue for the company, which helps them and makes us happy.
and with a game of this scale, they'll need mass amounts of players to test it. |

Fully agree with what has been said. I haven't full-timed subbed for years and I probably would just to gain beta access.
However, I don't fancy doing it for an indefinite ammount of time for something i'll use very little. I would much prefer to pre-order the game and get beta access. |

I would never pay to get in a beta, the testers are doing the company a favor by finding exploits/glitches/bugs by testing that they may have over looked.
To pay to get into a beta is a incredibly cheap move. I would be embarrassed if I charged people for access to a beta. Mind you, Im currently subbed to PS, but not for the beta alone, I enjoy playing the game from time to time |

That said, I'd pay.

Paying money for a hacker ridden game which is a shell of it's former self just for beta access is pretty bad.
Plenty of people will get in who aren't currently subscribers to PS1. I mean I know we all trust SoE and such around here because they've never lied, have always kept our account information secure, and have never, ever killed their own franchises but let's not get too carried away with ourselves alright? |

And you all know that you don't want beta to actually walk around the map testing every rock and object for geometry glitches, you want to play that game. That's all.
Won't lie, that's pretty much me too... but I'll be 'stress testing' it while I am! |
