On January 29th, 2012 a web browser game made by MuchDifferrent will attempt to land in the Guinness Book of World Records by hosting a first-person shooter supporting up to 1000 simultaneous players on a single map.
In their Gamer info screen, the original Planetside is given credit for the current holder of player density.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Or course, looking at the screenshots, it's no where near the graphical details of PS2 or PS1 for that matter. They should really categorize the record into genres. A web based game vs. a full 3D game engine shouldn't be compared with each other...

Yeah they did a record attempt in PS1 on the test server which actually wasnt nearly as full as the servers were daily per continent. And despite the rumors of it not happening, ps1 at the time had 166 per side, up to 499 players. But the record attempt on the test server didnt get very close to that sadly, however my guess is they prob got an official count on the regular servers at some point.
PS2 will shatter this new record attempt in rather short order. But cool to see others working on the technology for this kind of stuff.

The record is for all those players being completely interactive with each other somethin that ww2ol didnt quite do.

Didn't Planetside support 498 players in the beginning? 166 per side. Later it was lowered to 133. As there was a way to avoid the endless queues (exploit! I don't think that many people knew about it though, otherwise the server would have probably crashed), we probably had some fights with up to 550 players on a continent I recon. Good ol' days.

I don't remember anything like that. I've seen a good 500+ though during a test server. I had a powerful computer and it lagged. Cease fire then they'd cycle the base color so everyone would shoot up to max BR. When that cease fire ended it was a bloodbath of 5 fps action :P

Well Higby and Smedley have said "thousands", but a specific limit or number hasn't been disclosed. I imagine it'll be figured out during beta testing.

You could just edit the first post.
It would be a nice thing to throw into their Marketing and PR, "On 'Month' 'Day' Planetside 2 will break records"

Also don't expect to see 1500 players in a single spot in PS2. Like I said before you need to use statistics and poisson processes to calculate the actual number of players in the game in your area. In layman's terms unless spawning is instant there are times when players are dead and are heading into the battle. Also when they are inside of the base and portal culled (or vice-verse when you are inside and they are outside). Also when players aren't moving resulting in no state changes for a few frames (for instance, a sniper or cloaker). hmm I was going to show you naive calculations using Quake style networking with 1K players, but I kind of scared myself a little bit with that calculation. Suffice to say they are probably better than a naive calculation.

Just a quick bit of bragging. The FAQ had said that the last game to have the most players in a single match was MAG at 256. I contacted their company, MuchDifferent, and let them know of their error. Their CEO Christian Lönnholm asked me to give them a citation. When I finally found one they updated their FAQ.
However, I also made them aware that Planetside 2 was aiming for a 1000 players. I'm sorry! I have betrayed the community! |
