At least this isn't Tribes where you're constantly spraying at people who are hard to hit because they're flying around on jetpacks. Speaking of that, do you get parachutes in the game or some way of jumping off high places and survive?
The Light Assault get jump jet jet packs. Every 10 seconds or so they can jump about 10 - 15 feet. It's nowehre near as fast as Tribes though, and your accuracy goes to shit while flying.

Not at "star-wars" levels as some people are expecting when they read about a game set in the future.

The VS is an expection though, but they are based on researching alien artifacts, so.
Part of the charm of Planetside was the fusion of futuristic with with traditional and it worked nicely.

Everything hi-tech and fictional loses a connection to something plausable and usually doesn't feel right.

Yep, it's handy for clearing walls and avoiding fire, but beyond that it's not meant for active combat. But then again they might have different variations of the jet back like they mentioned.

Still wouldn't expect anything like tribes to come of it.

Is battlefield dieing? Its starting to compete with COD, the best selling game inhistory (much to most gamers chagrin) and in my opinion is a much better game. I think your main complaint is more that theyre gearing it toward a console market, so maps are smaller, and PC versions of maps are reworked for the main stream.

As a console gamer myself, i love BF3. And the thought of going back to the PC and competing with guys who now have 7 years of twitch reaction aiming behind them, is soo daunting i dont have the energy for it. Whereas a controler, im as good as anyone else. And there has been no reason in the last 5 years to even buy an FPS on the PC, short of more people on battlefield maps.

My guess is, there will be a shift once PS2 is released. Where you hear about a battlefield game called something like "Battlefield World War" that will be in the same vein of PS2. And the other games will stop dragging their feet behind COD, and start taking some initiative.

I had this really big reply but it vanished

The thing I like most about PS1 is that I can end a night's play with 5 kills and 60odd deaths and still know that I did my part for the war effort.

I deploy many AMSs so that the zerglings can swarm into the base to cap it. I drive lodestars to repair our vehicles (and I usually don't carry a weapon when I'm piloting. Just a glue gun) I pilot Galaxy Gunships to cause mayhem and destruction and to provide a huge, irresistible target so that my outfit and the zerg can get into better positions.

I usually end the night with over 600 assists. That is, as a direct result of my actions, 600 enemies have been killed.

My AMS deployment means our supply of fresh meat for the grinder has less distance to travel to get to killing. That means the pressure is kept up which slowly grinds us into a winning position.

I've never played a game that has such a sense of "Look what I achieved" Nothing I like more than logging in the next day and seeing the same base still held by our faction. Knowing that something I did 24 hours ago still matters right now.

and seriously... Does nobody spec AMS anymore?

That's the thing. The FPS market isn't one market, it includes multiple markets. Quake/UT has different players to Tribes which has different players to CoD which has different players to Battlefield...You could turn every franchise into something similar to CoD (casual console-targeted arena shooters) and they'd all probably do quite well, but then you're losing all the FPS players who are looking for something that isn't...that.

I know we harp on about not turning PS into BF3, which I agree with, but it seems there's a BF1942-BF2 crowd that's ripe for poaching if PS2 can retain some slowness, with more of an emphasis on logistics and tactical decisions, instead of drifting towards the constant action and constant instant gratification of CoD (Bonus! Well done! Win! Reward! Achievement!).

Yes BF on PC is dying/dead it's honestly been that way since BC1 was released.

The game is now fully consolized.. and EA and dice are after that money at all costs.. so it's infantry focused, small maps and the like conquest with flag caps in shooting distance from each other.

Now BF on the console is thriving... because the game is console developed and focused period.. rush mode tdm sdm.. they just threw in conquest because of complaints before.

Smart PC gamers and BF vets have recognized this and moved onto more PC focused games like Planetside 2 and other f2p games that are coming out.

and yup I am another who was a mordor vet.. but i got banned by aurora back during the beta days because they tend to not like you telling the truth about dice and ea.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Most of us in Mordor don't mind that weapons became more effective than BF2 but the problem is small maps, and constant funneling of players all into the same exact point. PS2 could copy BF3 play(meaning infantry and vehicle specific) exactly, and so long as it retains the huge map, the galaxy dropping, the ability to forego combat and just drive asset vehicles, the ability to go around capping backflags or destroying backflag assets, even though never seeing an enemy for hours, it will be all the much better than Battlefield for it.

Been reading up on this thread and also would like to welcome all the BF players who are joining in.

One thing that is fantastic about PS2 is that the Dev team is extremely open and communicates with us almost on a daily basis.
That is pretty much unheard of in the MMO genre.

PS1 for me has created so many fun fighting memories and to this day remains the only game where you worked for a greater good instead of boosting your stats or character instead.
