The Liberator

There does not seem to be a lot of information on this craft... I didnt see anything show up on the auto-search when you start a thread, so I would like to know some more details, if I missed stuff.

Is it 2 or 3 crewed? From last I think I heard... it was still a 3 crew craft, but that tail gun needs to be worth a damn, or it will just be superfluous.

What kind of gun does the pilot get? I kinda liked the forward gun in PS1, I hope the forward-arc gun is decent. I like the gunship feel... popping over trees or structures to fire, then dipping down, or running a strafe. Hide n seek kinda stuff with an aircraft, saw helo pilots do this in the marines, always thought it was cool.

Most importantly for my daughter/gunner... what is the main gun now supposed to be like? I read somewhere it is similar to an AC-130?! LOL, thats going to be one mean sumbitch... I think that would be like firing a howitzer from the sky... has the main gun-type been verified (as much as it can be at this point...)? I hope it is not fired from just one side like the AC-130, I prefer a more centered gun... though it would be hell-in-air to have a flying howitzer...

From my questions, you can see that I am trying to wrap my head around how to employ this thing, so help me out here...

I saw something somewhere. Might be in the post on top in one of it's links. It says something about it being(potentially) a gunship instead of a bomber but having 3 seats. It's a gunship for effectiveness in combat or something. There were some other details but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

If I'm not mistaken they said it will be 3 man, and have a centered main gun.

Good. Centered gun, and not a bomber... I think that makes it a great candidate for me and my gunner, since its going to be hard to convince her to get out of a MagRider...

I wish Higby would park his reaver for a little while, get some of his co-workers and give a Liberator a bit of a spin... I want to hear... that... gun...

3 person. No word on what will be done to make the tailgun useful, but they'll have to do something in beta if they don't in alpha.

It retains a good pilot gun, though I'm not sure of specifics.

The main gun is a downward facing 150mm cannon (the Vanguard's gun). The firing arc is similar to what you could hit with bombs in the original version but somewhat larger, so the experience for the pilot hasn't changed fundamentally but the bomber gets a much greater say in what they shoot at and when.

All of this is my understanding, and subject to being wrong. You'll notice I haven't said anything about customization, that's because I haven't heard anything. Looking forward to flying it.

It's thinking like this that helped boost my air to air kill stats by taking out defenseless Libs.

I am a big fan of vehicles that take more than 1 person to operate, a vehicle with several guns/stations for people to operate sounds really exciting, I have a group of friends and if we could all get into the same vehicle that would be tits.

How does thinking that the tailgun needs to be worth manning so that Libs won't be defenseless help your kill stats?

I just hope the under carriage bombers gun has a spherical design, like the rear end of the previous liberator. Still one of the coolest peices of real life technology if you ask me. Must have felt like a bad ass video game during a war, before the whole.... horrible deaths, and the fact there theres a thin sheet of glass between you and a horrific fall to your death (they werent allowed to wear parachutes cos they couldnt fit in with them).

I'm hoping to see reliance on directional armor for the lib. Heaviest on the front/bottom, then sides/back, then top. That would give them appropriate staying power for anti-infantry or tankbusting, while ensuring that other aircav could take them down.

After that I'm hoping for something like the chopper weapons from BF2. Say, an auto-grenade launcher or a big-ass guided missile.

I've rear-gunned a Liberator enough times to know that that seat is far from useless. It helps to have direct voice contact with the pilot, so you don't get mossies and reavers outside of your turret arc.

Of course, if you've got four reavers and a mossy on your tail, you're screwed regardless. Best to discharge as many bombs as possible before the inevitable respawn.
