Here's my outlook on snipers in this game. This isn't BF or COD or any other game with shit close quarter combat. I don't want to see your stats because I could honestly give a shit about a crappy game like BF...Sorry but its true. This is Planetside with wide open spaces with 100's if not 1000's of players fighting it out over territory.
If your dumb enough to not use proper cover when your advancing and keep getting killed by a sniper then its your own dam fault. Pay the hell attention to what your doing. People are complaining about snipers because they keep trying to compare planetside to some crappy game with a small maps where the one or two lone snipers in their 32 man game runs up to some secluded corner and commences to destroying people because they have no choice but to run that route just to get to the sniper. Snipers where never really a issue in planetside 1 nor do I think they will be issue come planetside 2. Your assuming out the countless hundreds of players fighting over a facility your gonna be the one guy out of lets assume 3 to 400 other players that is going to constantly take a bullet to the face. If your dieing that much in this game its time for you to probably rethink how your playing or maybe even consider another genre. I don't see a problem with 1 shot 1 kill head shot nor do I see a problem with PS2 keeping the sniping setup from PS1. |

One shot kills? Maybe against infiltrators. Heavy assaults and medics getting one shotted isn't going to happen. Last edited by ArcIyte; 2012-04-03 at 02:46 PM. |

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but... "SKILL" shots (head shots or vulnerable area shots) that cause 1 shot 1 kill are, as you said, fine in my eyes. PS 1 didn't have this, and if a player had any sense, they would use this fact to the disadvantage of lone snipers any how. The best snipers were those who preyed on the weak (and i say best in the sense of them knowing how to maximize their killing potential) or in pairs. Fighting fully armored and healthed people was asking for them to side step a few steps behind cover, regen and repair, and just come right back out. I am in favor of "skill" (term used loosely once again) shots being possible 1 hit kills in the most extreme circumstances (The gun is designed for long range accurate power and little else), but not in that being a common theme that is expected. I will note that i also like field rifles (semi automatic, medium range rifles) but i do /not/ want them to be ultra lethal. Field rifles to me are essentially heavy single shot assault rifles. One last thing. If you where sniping solo in Planetside 1 you where not doing it right. Some of the best snipers I have seen ran in pairs, which is how it was with ppl who knew what they where doing. Your able to spot, destroy enemy equipment or decimate a flank with focused fire. This is what I want to continue seeing come PS2.
I cannot see 1 shot 1 kill headshots destroying this game. As long as they put a slight delay on scopes when its being brought up. Maybe 1 to 1.5 sec delay I really can't see it being a problem. It will cut out on the players running around in CQC with a sniper rifle. |

Here's the thing that bugs me about 1SK headshots:
People stand still all the time. More importantly, I think they should be able to stand still without having to worry about instantly dying. You should always give people a chance at survival, even if it's a slim one. It isn't fair to punish the support classes for standing still to heal somebody or construct something. Hell, even offensive classes will pop out, crouch to fire and then withdraw. They need to be given a chance to save themselves. The majority of my targets in PS1 were not moving when I made the first shot. Giving me the ability to 1SK them would have been a nightmare. For a target that isn't moving, any idiot can make a headshot. The PS1 bolt driver was accurate enough that it would have been trivial at medium-ish ranges. I agree that if you can headshot a moving target, it'd be nice if you were rewarded for that somehow. But killing stationary players instantly is bad, bad, bad. It's simply too powerful an ability for how easy it is, and will lead to snipers being a pestilence. Even with a 2-shot-kill system, you can get near-instant kills pretty easily anyways. One of the cheesiest (or most effective) sniping tactics in PS1 was to simply wait for your target to start taking fire. Most people would withdraw to rep at about half health, so all you had to do was wait until a friendly started shooting at them before joining in. 90% of the time, their hp would vanish before they had a chance to react. Given the new shield system will encourage people to play peek-a-boo, a sniper's highly front-loaded damage will remain an excellent way to drop enemies who keep taking cover before the MA users can kill them. In areas with dense infantry cover, you'll want your team to have at least one sniper for exactly this reason. Snipers don't need 1SK. They just don't. |
