New ~$1,000 PC for Planetside 2

Thanks in advance. This is a great forum. I'm pretty pumped about ps2. So.....

I need to get a new pc for planet side 2. I'm using an older mac so I'm out of the loop on pc tech.

I'd like to spend about $1,000 on just the rig. I have a monitor and all the peripherals.

So here are my questions:

What's better in general for video cards sli or single card?

Higby indicated that nvidia might be better for physx. Is nvidia better overall?

If you had to buy a 1k rig what would your priorities be

Is there any reason to increase or decrease the budget a little? (more bang for a few bucks more?)

Please answer these questions. Then I will do yours.

1. What is your budget and does that include shipping/taxes?

2. Where do you live?

3. What do you need this computer to do (like gaming, Photoshop, and so on)?

4. What parts will you need for the computer? Please list what parts specifically.

5. Are you reusing any parts for this computer? If so please say what parts.

6. What kind of monitor/resolution do you have or want to get to use for the computer?

7. Do you have a legit OS? If so what OS and is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

8. What are you looking for the motherboard to have feature wise? Like SLI, Crossfire, Firewire, USB 3.0, Sata 6.0 Gb/s, and so on.

9. Any plans to overclock the CPU or GPU?

10. What time kind of time frame are you planning on ordering these parts?

I recently made a rig for about 700-800. And to save some cash I am using a HDTV as a screen. I recommend a AMD quad, a 6950 graphics card, at least 8 GBs of RAM and try to get one of the latest motherboards so if you ever decide to upgrade your computer in the future it will be easier.

I am sure people will say to get other parts, but that is what has been working for me and I enjoy it.

For $1000 these day you can expect to get a Intel quad (at least was the i5 2400, but now the 34XX) plus at least a GTX 560 Ti 448/HD 7850. All depends on if someone wants a SSD, type of motherboard, if they need a OS and so on.

Just play games.

I have a 24" Dell monitor with DVI input & mouse/kb. I will get a joystick if PS2 supports it. Otherwise, all new parts. I need it all.

"The best". Ok, good enough that it does not slow me down, but things don't look like giant boxes.

I have Windows 64-bit home edition (retail box). I'm open to upgrading.

I don't know enough to answer that. It just needs to have very fast graphics. I don't need HDD space or Blu-ray burner or any fluff.

Sure, provided it's reasonably simple and low-medium risk.

Lets wait and see what deals Micro Center potentially will have on Ivy Bridge is released. You will probably be able to save some money that way at least.

Duke if you can drop the ram down to a lower speed like 1333mhz. Anything higher doesnt make the difference so it's not worth the cost. 8gb will be good enough too. You can use the extra funds to get a 7950 instead. They can be had for 370 on newegg but I would go for the 400 ones like gigabyte for a better HS.

Well guy is a idiot. Never heard of that before. Probably put the voltage to high and clocked it 1.5GHz lol.

Overclocking ram doesn't do anything at all is the problem. If you really want something to play with I would put that money towards a i7. At least that has benefits.

I haven't heard of anything getting seriously hot, outside of real hardware failure and ill-advised overclocking, since something like the 90nm era. 7-series? before they went to the more modern, shrouded dual-slot coolers?

That looks like a good deal. Is the z77 mboard worth getting for the $50 off?

I feel foolish. The z77 is some kind of generation designation. i thought it was a brand name.

What's a good brand of board to get?

If you have no plans for multi GPU I would go for this. For brands check out ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte.
