This would amuse me greatly in a gimmicky way. Could even become non gimmicky at some point. No objections from me!
Btw it's probably going a bit far to equate one potential feature with another on the grounds of performance. I'd love weapon holstering too, but we know next to nothing about the specific hurdles each feature would introduce. |

Indeed, it was being built for EQ Next. The surprise to me is that it's now being worked into EQ2, after so long of being given the impression that it was a Forge Light thing.
As for PS2, I'm not sure I can see how it fits. But hell, why not?

I love how so many people just go on and assume that if this goes in, an important FPS feature won't and everyone will lag. Computers are what this game is running on. You can upgrade computers. So: Make Planetside 2 w/o SOEmote> Optimize it for a little lag as humanly possible> Upgrade computers running the game> Implement SOEmote> Upgrade as needed for other features.
It's like buying candy when you're out for groceries. Sure, you don't NEED candy and it should take a backseat to the rest of your food, but everyone loves a Snickers every now and again. Besides, if you need more food, you're getting paid. Use THAT money. |

Networks are lightyears ahead of what they were when PS1 came out, but they're still lightyears from being unlimited. The more useless information you're sending/recieving, more likely you are to lag the hell out of your pants (and i'm not even one of the people who usually scream and hurl stuff at their monitors for having a ping greater than 100ms). I'm vehemently against this. It's a gimmick at the very best and the PS2 team will ALWAYS have better things to do than implement gimmicks! Do not confuse this feature with making planetside a character driven game. Customization and being your character is crucial in planetside 2, but I can think of a hundred things off the top of my head ON THE SPOT that would be better than facial expressions. Its silly, its a waste of time, and it should be forever below the cut-bar. Here's a small sample of features worth more than SOEmote: Vehicle enter/exit animations Custom voice packs Outfit custom logos Outfit headquarters/cruisers Character hangar/locker/apartment Customizable vehicle interiors Ingame ops-planning room (with interactive holographic map) Situational animations (salute the nearest higher ranking outfit member) Awardable outfit status symbols for officers Killboards (tracking all kills, number of kills, kills/day, etc, think Eve Online) Review formation (for taking outfit screenshots) Special kill animations (such as for being destroyed by drop pod) |
