New Player Question

As someone who never played PS1 I was wondering if any grizzled veterans would be kind enough to give a quick run though of the PS slang. I can imagine few things more embarrassing than actually getting to play PS2 and being directed to do something using acronyms and other things I do not recognize only to perform the exact opposite what I was asked to do. Thanks.

  • ADV MED (Advanced Medic) - Archaic name to be expected. A medic with means to res people.
  • AI, AV, AA - Anti-Personnel (Anti-Infantry), Anti-Transport (Anti-Vehicular) Anti-Air.
  • Airterm - Air Vehicle Terminal.
  • Backhacking - A strategy in 2 varieties - "Backhacking" usually describes hacking a base with defending force staying guard and "ghosthacking" represents a hack that has no defense force on it.
  • BD - Original name for "backdoor", a door that was placed on the outer side of base walls in PlanetSide, can make a return in some form.
  • Boomer - Is a CE - a sticky explosive box that has a remote trigger - Used on door frames and corners as booby traps, now known as C4.
  • CC - Control Console (a remnant of PS1, I expect this short name to be given to the hackable points of the game)
  • CE (ACE by the book) - Combat Engineering - a noun naming all the goodies engi has to place.
  • Cloaker, Infil - Infiltrator, the first name comes from PS1 VO "Cloaked enemy detected".
  • CR5 - The name actually stands for Command Rank 5, a secondary (maxed) level that gave you ability to use global chat. Expect it to to be the nomaded name for Leadership-maxedout people in PS2.
  • Dyson - Expect this to be a name for VS ES jet - Scythe. It was the first try in naming it, it didn't get along with the community. Google the Dyson images if you want to know why.
  • ES - Empire Specific
  • EZmode - Describes the doctrine of NC in the first game. Let's see if the tradition moves on to the sequel.
  • Farming - Often "interfarming" is the taking of an interlink facility (or other base) on an enemy controlled continent with the sole purpose of attracting 2-3 times your own numbers in enemies, in order to take advantage of the facility features and get yourself and your team lots of kills. Planetside 1 tactic, used for fun or for pulling substantial enemy from the main fights in order for your empire to progress. There's a second meaning of the word, under "whoring".
  • Fishheads and all thing fish-related - nicknames for VS. Because there's something fishy in their design.
  • Fury, Basilisk, Wraith - names of the 3 original ATVs (which is now has it's own name - "The Flash")
  • Genhold - Generator Hold - a strategy from the original, PS1, I don't expect it to return in PS2 due to absence of gens, but just so you know - the strategy implies disabling the generator, leaving a base entirely offline with only CC operational. All bases in the original game were linked and provided benefits through the chain to each other. Downed generator broke the chain until it was repaired.
  • GG - Galaxy Gunship - A later addition to planetside, a separate type of galaxy that acted as gunship instead of troop transport. Expect Galaxies equipped into Gunships to be named so.
  • Ghosting - Capturing a cont with small to no resistance
  • Gluegun - Repair Tool with "glue" being its ammo.
  • HA - Heavy Assault. Not only stands for class but also for 3 most powerful empire specific weapons: Jackhammer (NC), Lasher (VS), Mini Chaingun (TR)
  • Hotdrop - The use of an aircraft in order to fly over a facility/tower and eject and land on your desired location. The name also has 2 specific subnames: Galdrop - A hotdrop perfomed in group from a Galaxy, and Mozziedrop - used to great effect by re-secure teams due to the speed and individual control a single aircraft provides over a galaxy. Despite the ES fighters presented in, the term will still exist, though it will become faction specific, imo.
  • Jammer - an EMP grenade, there's no certainty if the name stays or goes, but the return of those is highly expected in PS2.
  • JH - JackHammer
  • MAX crash - You've heard of it no doubt. A strategy of an amassed MAX push.
  • MCG - Mini ChainGun
  • OL, PL, SL - L is for leader, O - outfit, P - platoon, S - squad. Can probably expect CL and GL in the upcoming game with C being continent and G being global.
  • OS - Orbital Strike.
  • Planet - After the certain expansion PS1 became divided into planets instead of conts. Expect later PS1 vets to call the conts (continents) the planets.
  • REK - A hacking tool from the original, that's not making a return in the release version of PS2.
  • Resec, to resec - To resecure a hacked base.
  • Rexo - A name for an armor type from the original, that became the design basement for PS2 Heavy Assault class. Expect HA's to be called rexos.
  • Smurf, Elmo, Barney - NC, TR and VS players accordingly.
  • Spawntubes (Or tubes) - A slang not so hard to decypher - A term used to describe an immobile spawning structure inside a spawnroom.
  • Squishee, Grunt, Softie - all foot soldiers no matter what armour they wear. Maxes are not considered squishees. It may origin from the sound you hear when you drive your tank over a footsoldier.
  • Threeway - A conflict with all three sides participating.
  • To hack a base - To initiate a hacking procedure. With PS2 system that means hacking >50% of the CCs. In PS1 there was only one CC per base so the roots of the name are quite obvious.
  • V-term, V-bay - Vehicle terminal. The second usually stands for a section of a base (if a vehicle terminal is inside the base) responsible for spawning of the ground vehicles. Can also be referred to as "the hangar".
  • Warping - 2 meanings: 1. Also known as ADADADADAD, strafing with bad connection resulting in irrational character movement, dictated by the imperfect PS1 netcode. 2. Teleporting to another continent.
  • Zerg, to zerg - To move aimlessly with the general battle flow. Other meaning - to attack en masse. "Zergfit" describes an outfit (clan/guild) of little tactical sense or leadership, that uses lemming-style attacks, in order to win battles through sheer numbers or exhausting the enemies resources.
  • Whoring - A synonym to "farming", this word means solely racking up kills using an easy method. The word is usually used in conjunction with another word, describing the method (as in "towerwhoring, mozziewhoring", with "killwhoring" being a general description). A noun "killwhore" is a noun describing both a person who is getting kills by unconventional means, and, if bears no negative accent, - a player, very good at maintaining high k/d ratio.

That actually reminds me.

Re: New Player Question

Farming - Often "interfarming" Is the taking of a interlink facility(or over base) on and enemy controlled continent with the sole purpose of attracting 2-3 times your own numbers in enemies in order to take advantage of the facilities features and get your self and your team lots of kills. Planetside 1 tactic, used for fun or for pulling substantial enemy from the main fights in order for your empire to progress.

So in context you would take say 20 guys (your squad of NC) to a base like Cear of VS controlled Forseral. You would hack and hold the base until it was yours (15minutes) During this time the enemy can notice and if good enough re-secure it. Once the bases was captured you would own it and the interlink benefit this particular base type provides (enemies appear on the minimap as red dots). The idea is then that the VS would send troops to take the base back before you continue to take the rest of the continent. Usually it will take 45-65 VS to take the base back. They would need to clear you out and then re-hack the base and keep it secure for those 15minutes.

PS2? not sure if this will be possible.

Mod - Ancient Modules, These are flashing balls installed into facilities(bases) providing additional benefit:

Vehicle / Pain / Healing / Sheild / Equipment / Speed(i think)

You collected the mods from the caves in the friendly mod buildings then you would charge then in the core of the cave. All the time you have a count down to exit the cave and reach a friendly base to install the module. You could carry one at a time and they would slow the speed of vehicles. They also explode on contact with water.

These provided substantial bonuses to the base they are installed in and any based linked to that base on the continent.

While you are carrying a module you show on the map as a blinking light to friend and foe so often it was a dangerous task to "run a mod" as the enemy would be attracted to it in view to steal or destroy it.

Enemies can steal mods from enemy bases by killing its power generator and take the mods to one of their own bases or simply to water to destroy them.

Surgile - Early in planetside you used to be able to use the surge(this would increase your running and strafing speed massively) implant whilst firing a gun. This was later reduced to putting the gun away(holstering) when the implant is activated as the increased speed made you harder to hit and some people didn't like that. (to be fair with planetsides netcode its probably for the best.)

Ant run - The ant is like a fuel truck and combine harvester all in one. Planetside 1 bases run on NTU fuel measured in increments of 10% to 100%. Damage to base systems would cause the bases auto repair feature to kick in and this consumes NTU(Fuel). An ant run would be called for and a player would drive the ant to a warpgate and deploy the ant would then harvest NTU from the warpgate. Once the player had harvested enough they would return to the Base and deploy the ant at the bases NTU silo refueling the base. Experience points towards battle ranks were awarded for doing this. (there are other mechanics to cause a base to lose NTU i just chose the most frequent cause)

-Also see Ant race and Ant demolition derby, outfits either racing ants on a self created route of having a demolition derby to the last man.

CEP - Command experience point, accrued through the leadership of squads to successful base captures or re-securing of hack bases. CEP levelled up your CR(Command Rank 1-5) with each rank awarding more and more extras for you to use/display

BEP - Battle experience points, Accrued through kills / squad members kills / Base captures / Ant runs

SEP - Support experience points, Accrued through assisting other people. Repairing armour / deploying AMS(mobile spawn points) / healing people / reviving people / deploying routers (a teleportation vehicle). (there are probably more i've missed for sep)

Boomer - Is a Mode of the ACE (engineers deployable tool) deploys a sticky explosive box that has a remote trigger - Used on door frames and corners as booby traps

Zergfit - Describes and outfit(clan/guild) of little tactical sense or leadership and uses lemmings style attacks in order to win a battle through sheer numbers or exhausting the enemies resources.

Mossy drop (hotdrop) The use of a mosquito or other aircraft in order to fly over a facility/tower and eject and land on your desired location. Used to great effect by re-secure teams due to the speed and individual control a single aircraft provides over a galaxy.

A lot of these acronyms will not apply to PS2 but still it will be handy to know if you join a veteran outfit or find threads on psu using them.

bolter, the sniper rifle from ps1.
cloaker, semi invisible armor class.

IE I ate a bolt from that sniper while cloaking because he couldn't see I was on his team.

EMP a class of grenade that shut down implants, prevented vehicles from firing for a short time, and set of mines/disabled placeable defenses.

Glow green, green glow, the plasma grenade was a dot weapon, you were being damaged as long as a green plasma glow was over you.
