take a look at this thread, end of third page..
http://www.planetside-universe.com/s...t=20500&page=3 imo, if a thread has been inactive and hasn't been replied to in 60-90 days, it should receive an automatic lock.

I have issue with this though. So, is it site policy to not post in old threads? Because you guys shut down new threads due to old thread topics already existing. I think I would accept auto-locking and/or actively preventing posting in an old thread topic if there's a policy that says "Do not create new threads on old topics. If you have something new to address with the topic that hasn't already been discussed then please create a new thread."... There would need to be a clause in the cross-posting rule that already exists about this.

There is no programmatic, black/white, way to determine the nature of a post.
Posting in a thread that is 6 months old may be acceptable as long as the majority of the discussion is not based on time sensitive information. Posting about a possible beta date when there is a sticky just for that, it should be in the sticky. Posting about a new topic about a subject that has a 10 page thread which has a last post that is two weeks old, it should probably be in there. This is not unique to PSU forums, it happens everywhere and is moderated as needed. Some places implement auto closing of threads, we prefer not to and moderate case by case.
