I remember reading Totalbiscuit's like seven year old thread from when he quit the forum.. The community wasn't all that nice back then if I'm correct
However there's still alot of newbie and noob-hate considering that a large population of the active members here are Planetside 1 veterans, though that aside I am growing more and more fond of this site each day. |

You are correct IgloGlass, 9 years is quite a long time
Thank you everyone for the kind words. I think we have managed to keep things fairly constructive most of the time considering the massive hype this community is undergoing right now. I wouldn't say we are heavily moderated though. We try to keep things clean and organized as much as we can. |

Hmmmm - When the game comes out the number of people on the forums will drop. There will be - PS2 Beta Forums later PS2 Forums - Planetside Universe Forums - Outfit Forums - Alliance Forums and for some people, other forums for other interests, to read and write. Work - School - Family - Not much time left for game play if you read / write on all of those forums. The community will be in game fighting not writing on forums.
Hamma you have done a good job providing info on PS2 - Thanks

I literally found out about this game JUST after the e3 streams, I can't remember how I found Planetside 2 now. This is actually the first game I've ever, ever kept up to date with. I must be on the forums several hours a day. I find the community here amazing, although you get the few trolls. Referring to a few other comments, I think I'm here to stay, being 18 I hope I'll be here until I'm 28-30.

I actually started a thread a while back about how we could keep the community at its best in the game because i think the same as you do OP that this is a great community. I think the reason like they said is because its been here nine years so its had time to grow and i think it comes from the fact too that the people here genuninely love the game and hamma and basti and all the mods here care about the work they do here. Its just a game but in a way its more.
Im just getting into this whole PS thing, never really played the first one but about a month but I had a game i played for about 5 years enemy territory quake wars that had one of the best communities ever and it was because of that thats kindve gotten me so excited about PS2. Its not the fact that the game has amazing graphics, or its free to play or that you can use all these vehicles and customize weapons and customize your avatar and this whole huge amount of options and ways to play. Its the fact that this community seems to genuinely love this game and that tells me right there its gonna be good. Hell even the developers of the game are awesome, i was watching AGN last night and you know sitting there watching higby and clegg and all those guys in his office, it really doesnt feel like PR stuff,it kinda felt like you were hanging out with friends or something. Even those guys seem to care about the game, and not just in that fake ass corporate we makin money kinda way/ So i think theres a lot of hope PS2 will have one of the best communities ever. Even on the official forums. Because of the established community as a foundation that will weed out most of the trolls. As far as the worst communities, you already said dont list COD, we all know that ones bad but WOW, and BF3 i think have the worst communities. I still play BF3 and even though the game itself is fun i end up cussing at the top of my lungs about half the time because of people doing stupid shit or being rude/immature for no reason. Maybe im just getting old and cant be bothered with all that bs anymore but my patience has worn thin for it. Im kinda worried im gonna end up becoming one of those people one day haha. There was this one guy on COD MW2 me and my buddy were playing with. Long story short this guy got so pissed because we were kicking his teams butt he starts screaming into the mic about how he was gonna come to my friends house and kill his dog and murder his GF and burn his house down lol. Just sometimes i really think people forget games are supposed to be fun and take it waaaaaay too seriously. But I guess thats a sign of the times. I got a good feeling about this community and PS2, plan to make it my game of choice for the next half a decade like quake wars was for me hopefully. |

I feel as if I will be around this community for a while as well. I come from different games that I stick to for years, but never have really been a big part of the community, other than maybe 2 games (Rift and RS).
In a way, it feels like a stress reducing method to just be on these forums. Half the time I say nothing and just read the news and funny posts, and occasionally share my opinion where I think it belongs. I never see people jumping at others throats because of dumb stuff (if they do, typically it is well-deserved, cause we all know some people need to be screamed at sometimes haha). Plus the main thing people are upset about is the beta not being sooner, but at least a good 80% will admit that they can wait because they know the game is going to be great, and SOE can take time to make it the best it possibly is (even though we ALL know that being in the beta is gonna be amazing ). |

How can you not have this sort of respectfull behavior when everyone around you is just, if not even more so, as passionate as yourself about PS(2). While we all have our own opinions, and rightfully so mind you, it doesn't mean that one needs to hate eachother. (<3)
We are all here for one thing collectively and so far we've managed to remember this. Yes, this community is good. |

Welcome to the community.
How to start a thread, get flamed, and have a thread locked because people can't play nice: 1. Start a thread talking about how Battleframe Robotics should be in Planetside 2. 2. Start a thread saying you believe that a region lock to keep ping times down is good for the game. 3. Start a thread mentioning the words "dumbed down" about PS2 gameplay. 4. Start a thread that xyz feature from BF/COD should be added to PS2. 5. Start a thread where the second post is "In b4 lock." Hamma does his best, and I admire all that he has done here, but this is a tough community with some deep set tunnel vision, and he doesn't have enough time in the day to deal with all the children. So, a couple quick things:
1. Forums--even official forums--account for about 2% of a game's playerbase. If that seems low, it's because it is. The disparity between the amount of people who play a game vs. people who play a game, sign up for a forum, and discuss the game, is incredibly wide. Most consumers aren't actually aware of this, but 2% is the generally accepted average forum-to-playerbase statistic for every type of game, from FPS to MMO to RTS. 2. As someone mentioned before, this is a moderated fansite made up of veterans and people who have enough interest in the game to register and post. This is pre-launch; the vocal forum community's going to be a lot smaller (and more accountable with their posts) before the game is even out. 3. Planetside 2 is completely free to play. There are no barriers to entry; no box to buy, no subscription fee. FPS communities typically aren't the best communities. (Unless they cater to small, niche playerbases, like mods) And not to single out players of F2P games, but because there's no barrier they tend to be a lot less accountable, and more like, "I don't care if I'm disruptive or a jerk; the game is free. If they ban me I can make a new account." Just keep in mind FPS + free in-game isn't going to look how this community looks. You should fully expect nasally-voiced smacktalk and getting teabagged in PS2. |

I hope things don't get too bad. All ages, all demographics, everyone with the tech to run it and even some who don't, we'll see a ton of people.
We'll see a lot of players who get into PS2 and make it their new home for the next 10 years. A lot of happy long-term players is what I see in the future of PS2. We'll also see a lot of bad players from modern FPS games, both terribly noobish and also being deplorable people in general. Hopefully we can shun them enough that they clean it up or don't stick around. We definitely need to be vigilant about self-policing and reporting bad apples, we can't just leave it all on the GMs and Customer Support. A strong, healthy, active community will make it easy to sort the jerks and trolls from people who genuinely want to be a part of the PS2 community, and the game itself.
