Re: Will your desktop/laptop run PS2? V2 ***Ask here***

Just revamped my system and was wondering will this run PS2 on High settings:

CPU:AMD Athlon II X 4 620
Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
RAM: 8 GB Kingston HyperX 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

Yeah, your graphical settings just aren't going to matter much, high or low. The graphics card is plenty.

However your CPU is in the range of the lowest core 2 quads and middle duos.
Those struggle...and I can't imagine you're looking at more than 15-25 fps in a fight.

If I upgraded my CPU to a AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 Ghz would that help?

It would help, but depending on what motherboard you have, you can probably go to an FX-6100 with out a hardware swap.

If you need a new Motherboard you could go one of these routes.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($129.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $194.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

---OR---

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 3.3GHz Dual-Core Processor ($119.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $194.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Both would be significant upgrades for you.

It would help in absolute terms..but you'd be upgrading to a few generations behind and I don't really like recommending that. If you feel you have to do something now I think I would do that over those $200 options.

I wouldn't do a new CPU/Mobo unless you've got about $300 to spend to get to an i5 or FX-8350.

I think thats the route I'm going to go because my current Mobo is a Gigabyte MA790GP-UD4H and I'm not sure if it supports a AMD FX CPU seeing that they are socket AM3. The box says it's AM3 ready, but I'm not 100% sure if it would support this AMD FX.

Phenom II X6 1100T
Looks like this is the Fastest you can go on that Motherboard.

If you want to upgrade on that board this is probably your last sensible bet to get a CPU for it, at least new.

They are no longer making Phenom II's and the supply of them will only last so long.

Building a new pc

i5-3570k(not overclocking right away)
8gb ram
660ti graphics card.
Playing in 1920x1080 60mhz

How well could this handle ps2? Not overclocked.

As fine as anything, pretty much.

Can't really build a machine to play PS2 any better than something like this. Even a GTX660 or 7850 1GB would be fine for PS2 if you wanted to save some money. Build it in a mATX or ITX case to take it with you to play PlanetSide in more places!

I've installed the game and played a bit, getting about 15-25 FPS, and unable to play well because of it. I'm running all medium with flora and particles to low, tried all low but saw no improvement. My FPS is bottlenecked at the GPU.

Processor: Intel Core i5-2540M CPU 2.6 GHz
OS: Windows 7
Memory: 8 GB Dual-Channel RAM
Hard Drive: 98 GB free
Video Memory: 2 GB
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 555M

It's a laptop, by the way. Anyways, looking to see if I can hope to run the game with a higher framerate or not.

I'm afraid your GPU is actually at near bottom-end of the required line (it corresponds to roughly a 9800GT). However, the fact that of turning all the settings down gave you no improvement means it's not actually your GPU that's bottlenecking it (even though that's what it says). This being a laptop, I'd suspect one of two things: either you have heat issues that are causing the CPU to throttle (fairly easy for you to figure this out), or your wireless card isn't fast enough and significantly delays your packets (which in PS2 translate to lower framerates). I'd recommend cleaning any exhausts the laptop has, and trying the game with a wired connection.

If you want more help on the issue, make a new thread or send me a PM, this isn't the thread for this type of discussion.

Alright, I'll try that out - Thanks for the help.

I built a budget gaming PC a few months ago:

Intel Pentium G850 2.9ghz
Asus Radeon HD 7750 Video Card
4GB ram
Windows 7

I can run BF3 on low-medium settings, so maybe I can run PS2 on low settings?
