What exactly did they say about BFRs that the mechophobic crowd got their panties in a bunch again? Last tiem i checked heavy tanks were to be closest we get.
Then again the mechophobes went on a rant when they showed of those fan made concepts for small AT-PT sized walkers so its probably nothing. Got to love the fact these guys automaticaly assume that any form of mech will function identicaly to PS1 BFRs. Has legs? OMGOPIQUIT4EVAHGAMEISDEAD! Last edited by MrMak; 2013-07-30 at 09:19 AM. |

I don't think the OP quite covers the impact of BFRs when first released.
A year after they were launched they had been massively changed. By 2010 they were a pale shadow of their initial selves. BFRs have no more or less potential to be under/overpowered than anything else put in the game. Balanced well .. they *might* be interesting. I would avoid including them because they come with a significant negative playerbase perception. However we already have them. The Maxes we are using are more like scaled down BFRs than PS1 maxes. Introduce them as a form of 'heavy max' and make the model bigger and some people might not realise they just got another repackaging of BFRs |

John Smedly at the begining of discussing Planetside 2 or Next as it was back then made us a simple promise, BFRs would never return and it's the only promise I hope he keeps.

This was never an "OMG they're going to add BFR's!!1" post, it was not written that way, it's simply a reminder of what went wrong and a suggestion on an alternate approach to the concept of having a high health & high damage unit added to the game. Release unbalanced weapons systems on the arms, let the masses sink the smedbucks, then 3 GUs later perform a "balance pass".

Anyone here play MWO? (Mech warrior Online) I did since beta and for 7 months until I got tired of the same combat on the same small maps with no meta game in sight, and no forseeable deadline in sight for any real improvement. To this day they still have not changed and the maps are still small in scale and one dimensional. So why am I bringing this up?
Planetside 2 has the opportunity and the resources to pull MWO playerbase away from that game as well as other mech oriented games. Why? Because they can offer something none of those games can. Mixed Arms combat on a scale that as a mech warrior fan, I always wished for. That and a meta game that I see actually happening and pieces being put in place for. Yes they will have to balance it, like anything else, but why rule out the possibility and deny the playerbase and SOE an opportunity just because of the past? I say bring on these BFRs, but just don't throw shit in a grinder and pop out somethng half ass. Look at what didn't work with them in the past and start there. When I think of BFRs I think of the Titan's Fall trailer. Not as big and powerful as the mechs from MWO or titles of old, but some happy medium. Last edited by CraazyCanuck; 2013-07-30 at 04:38 PM. |

BFR are easy to fix
4 man Crew 1 guys controle the legs only 1 guys controle the torso rotation 1 guys shoot with Arms mounted weapons 1 guys shoot with shoulders mounted weapons The amount of coordination and cooperation required will be pretty insane , and the learning curve will be huge |

I find it rather disappointing that people are so mortified at the idea of BFRs returning.
The things that made them OP in PS1, don't existing in PS2. I really don't think that a side straffing robot would be nearly as powerful as people think, given the sheer volume of AV options available. That said, as has been said before: Smedley said you don't have to worry. The whole point of what T-ray was saying was, do people really think that the devs would knowingly put that in the game just as powerful as it was in the beginning? The response has been: "OH GOD BFRS?! The very name fills me with terror, no matter what they are, I hate them by default, because they are BFRs!" |

i tried BFR's in PS1 in VR, and i was like OMFGBBQTHISSHITISOVERPOWEREDHOWCOULDITBEINAGAMELIK ETHISWTF
but in theory, it can be done in PS2. BFRs can be implemented, and will be balanced, considered how unbalanced BFRs were in ps1. I'm thinking along the lines of one guy controls the main weapons on the hands and controls the directions of the arms etc, the driver.... drives, and maybe has a light minigun of some description, and then a third guy on the secondary gun at the top. and no shields, just lots of armour. and maybe a speed nerf (no sprint, and NO JETPACKS), but with the ability to climb hills etc that tanks can't do. that is what i think, anyway. |
