I think the proper ending to that incomplete sentence is 'gets owned.'

Somehow the VS got behind the TR frontline, we were "exterminating" the resistance.

Notice the direct link to the TR sanc. Unlike VS, NC and TR can't lock a continent that isn't directly linked to thier sancs.
