Most certainly. Anything that uses combustion to propel mass is a firearm. That puts in Uncle Ed's ho-made blackpowder pistol, but leaves out paintball guns (CO2) and Rail guns.
ALSO: Good call Firefly. I think the whole 'ammo commonality' rationale for the M249 is BS. It fires fast- but that's it. No knockdown power.
