666 does not directly mean the devil... 666 is something called 'Helkos' or 'The Mark of the Beast' - a mark on the body resistant to pain that God places on those posessed by demons. Read specifically the book of Genesis, the story of Cain and Abel (sp? i'm tired)... Basically after the one brother killed the other God exiled him from the land that Adam and Eve had settled after leaving the garden... He placed a mark upon him (the mark of the beast) to show other people that he had been tempted and fell to the devil's powers...
