Post Shacknews Interviews DaveG

Shacknews recently snagged an interview with Dave Georgeson, former PS Producer who is now Senior Designer, at a press event in NYC. Here's two questions and their answers: <blockquote>JB: Any plans for native wildlife?

DG: Im not going to answer that one directly. But I will present something to you. Which is, right now the only artificial intelligence in the game is turrets. And its pretty basic A.I. If were going to put critters in, we have to have essentially artificial intelligence servers because we cant just load the zone servers down with that, because they cant think about all those problems with critters. So wed have to have artificial intelligence servers and then communicate back and forth between the zone servers and the A.I. servers as well as creating all the A.I. and the pathing for the aviators and the actual attack and defense modes. Its something wed want to do, but quite honestly its six to eight months of work. So dont expect it soon.

JB: Is that even a priority? If you had six to eight months would you rather do something else? It sounds sort of low priority.

DG: Well, we have a guy on the team who did all the A.I. for Deus Ex. And hes good at it. So its been something weve talked about doing a bunch of times. And its one of those things that if we did it it would be a parallel task. Wed take like a designer and a couple of competent programmers and they would go off into a closet and eight months later theyd come out with a system. So it wouldnt really affect what wed do with the rest of the game. The decision hasnt been made right now but those things are so important to the game that were willing to put that kind of commitment in. Although were discussing it. And I would love to design it. Just love to design it. We have really good ideas, theres been some stuff that Star Wars [Galaxies] did with the way their A.I. is behaving theyre really good concepts. Some of them could be transferred over into PlanetSide as well as some of the ideas we have on our own, but like you mentioned its kind of low priority.</UL>To see the rest of the interview, click the Source: link at the bottom of this news post.
