Platoon and Company leaders would be players that have specialised in the leadership tree, able to use a variety of tools to coordinate the troops under their command.
Planetside 2 will apparently have thousands of players on the same battlefield, and with that many troops a higher degree of organisations and coordination is required; Companies can provide that. The Company leader will be able to both make and accept broad missions for his players, then be able to break them down into smaller missions for individual Platoons or Squads to perform.
