Current state of this feature:
The dev team are copying BF3 very closely on this one, although I believe they are still not sure which class(es) will be able to utilise the *drop ammo* ability.
My suggestion:
Allow all soldiers to throw a single clip to a friendly ally in their crosshairs who is carrying the same weapon (or calibre), with the effect of subtracting this exact same amount from their personal ammo supply.
Sharing ammo this way, does not have to be mutually exclusive to the BF "drop ammo supply crate" style ability, which could allow supply of ammo for many different calibre of ammunition, possibly including explosives such as C4 or ammo for Heavy Assault weaponry.
Reasoning:
Even though there are no longer inventories for vehicles and infantry, I would still like to see ammo sharing as an integral part of the gameplay experience and available at some level regardless of class currently being played.
Battlefield has obviously spent a large amount of time basing their class skills around attracting people to team based gameplay. Although "Throw down a generic ammo crate" skill does provide avenues for paper-scissors-rock team-based play, however in implementing this PS2 will be losing yet another element of the continuity and immersion of Planetside that made you really feel like you weren’t just playing a shooter, but part of something bigger.
If my mate yells "
I’m out!" in the heat of battle... I want to be able to throw him a mag! I know I have enough to spare, because I can see so on my HUD, projected glowing neon against my visor!
I personally think this creates opportunities for constant teamwork without detracting too much from the forced teamwork, paper-scissors-rock style gameplay that ammo crates create, which I honestly feel can also be pretty fun and rewarding at times as well.
Everyone will still have their job to do, and everyone will also be able to help a brother in need.
