Last night I was fighting on Esamir. We had pushed the NC back across the map, but I noticed that they had retaken the bases on both the west and east coastlines and it wouldn't be long before they rehacked the bases behind us. The two main Vanu outfits fighting had neglected to protect the flanks and they were about to pay for it.
Well, seeing as I had gotten left behind, I decided to run down to Ymir and set up defenses around the gun tower north of the base. I figured anyone trying to take the Technology Plant would try and secure the gun tower first as it is very conveinently located just outside the main gate and makes for a good spawn location. Seeing as I was alone, I didn't really figure I'd make much of a obstacle to any coordinated advance on Ymir but I figured what the hell it wouldn't hurt to show some resistance in the area. Once I got to the gun tower I proceded to deploy Spitefires, mines and a large network of motion sensors that would allow me to monitor enemy movement from inside the security of the gun tower walls. Inside the gun tower I placed boomers on all three main floors. I was hoping that any hack of the gun tower would occur on the ground floor and my plan was to allow the enemy to break inside and set off the boomers one at a time as they raced for the CC located on the third floor. Well setting in ambush takes a lot of patience. After setting up everything I monitored the world map to watch the flow of battle for the next 30 minutes. I was itching to see some action and as I had decided that I wasn't going to play past midnight I was really hoping something would happen soon. About 10 minutes to 12:00 I counted out the number of Spitefires around the base and realized that I was 3 short of the maximum allotement. I rushed outside to lay in my last minute deployables and as soon as I got thru the door I saw someone run over one of the hills above the tower. Hightailling it back inside I watched the minimap to see if red or blue dots would start appearing inside my sensor net. After a few minutes I heard the distinctive roar of TR miniguns and watched as one by one the Spitefires north of the tower fell silent. Before long I watched four red blimps move up to the north door of the tower and from inside I could hear the REK being used to hack the door. As this was taking place I watched one dot move away from the door. He didn't get far though as he stepped on a mine I had placed along the wall. The loud bang of the mine preceeded the elimination of one red dot on the minimap. Well "So far so good.", I told myself and got ready for the remaining three outside the door. A quick whoosh of the door and soon I saw the glimmer of a TR cloaker round the corner at the base of the stairs. Poor bastard didn't know what hit him as my thumb came down on the trigger of my Boomer. It was very silent for a moment afterwards as his buddies took stock of the situation and figured out what to do next. Well like most TR with a chaingun in hand they decided that a good old rush up the stairs with muzzles flamming was the best tactic. I let loose with a rocklet from my punisher and ran for the upstairs. With shells peppering my backside and my life slowly disapppearing I just barely made it past the second boomer. Out of the corner of my vision I saw a TR soldier make it onto the floor and I hastily depressed the boomers detonater. This guy was lucky. He wasn't directly under the blast and had stayed near the wall. He must have been hurting however, as he ran back down the stairs to join his buddy. I gave chase but was quickly gun downed as I came down the stairs with my Punisher rocking. Of course if I had been smarter I should have simply deployed another boomer and waited for them to advance up the stairs again. With no other option available to me I respawned back into the tower determined to grab some equipement as fast as I could and get up stairs to pay my new friends another visit. After respawning I immediately grabbed a Sweeper combo I had saved and headed for the stairs. I'd just reached the first step when the first guy appeared above me and opened up with his chaingun. We flew at each other with bullets and shotgun shells flying. Lady luck was with me and he went down crumpled against the stairwell wall. I was hurting bad and turned around to grab some medkits before his buddy came down to even the score. Before I could reach the terminal it turned red. They had hacked the tower. "Damn!" I thought and headed back toward the stairs. I could hear footsteps above me and I knew the *** was up. There was no way I was going to survive another head on with a chaingun. The last guy came down on top of me and I went down riddled to the core but not without peppering him a few times with the Sweeper. After that I tried respawning into Ymir itself, but as I came out of the spawn tub I was gunned down by another chaingun weilding camper who had gotten there ahead of his buddies. Well it was now midnight anyway and so I spawned into the Sanctuary and exited the game. I hadened really racked up any huge amount of points from my solo attempt to defend Ymir but it had been a very exciting fight and for me that is the greatest satisfaction when playing the game. For me Planetside is all about those individual moments of satisfaction you get from a hard fought battle against superior odds or those titanic struggles against two teams that seem to go on for hours. Planetside is fun if you make it fun and don't look at it as a repetitive struggle back and forth over the same bases day in and day out.Look at each battle as a seperate fight, try to learn new tactics and above all make it fun for yourself. No one else will remember my small stand at that tower other than me and even the TR guys I was fighting against may have viewed the fight differently. They probably thought I was just another stupid Vanu player trying to go it alone. In the end they owned me, but I think I put up a good fight and that's all that really matters any way. |

I can't remember the name of the server, but it is the first "West" server listed. I think Markov is the second one on the list. Would be great to actually hear from the TR guys I was up against. I didn't pay too much attention to the names at the time, as I was too busy trying to keep chaingun rounds out of my body.

Good story, gonnagetyou.
Sometimes there's more glory to a good, but failed attempt, than to a successful one. You thought ahead and considered Your options. That You actually lost has little or no concequence. You fought valiantly. My hat's off to You. |
