Actually, if the game were meant to be just that, then there wouldn't be as as many continents, or ANY continents for that matter, and would just be a clone of UT or Quake 3. So far I think Planetside is a three-way game of capture the flag

Anyway, as long as something is hostile or in the way, I reckon people love shooting stuff. Therefore barricades = a good couple of seconds of carnage.

Havent you ever played a coop FPS where you are with like 5 guys runnin around pelting the shit out of one huge monster? Its cool.
