In my experience, it doesn't work.
1: It's designed to be fully crewed. Mosquitos will eat you for lunch without a tailgunner. 2: It has poor maneuverability, including no afterburner. It's not meant for up-close-and-personal combat roles. 3: A Mosquito is infinitely better for this purpose. It may not be called a 'gunship', but it is definitely The King of the Skies. Liberator can only be aquired at a place if a tech-plant is in the lattice, not so with Mosquito. Pick up Mosquito, Reaver, Lightning or a MAX suit if you want to own solo. Frankly, getting a strong squad going is far more rewarding in many ways.

If you're going to get a Lib get a config that has the extra 35mm replaced with bombs and try and never fly without a tailgunner or escort unless you have total air superioity. If you've got an escort trade the tailgunner ammo for bombs as well as the extra 35mm but only if you have an escort. If you don't have either a tailgunner or an excort a single Mosquito will take you down blindfolded.
While the 35mm is useful it's not something you can generally use with great effectiveness due to the Libs relatively bad handling, poor speed and lack of an afterburner. You can kill just about anything with it, and pretty quickly too I might add, but generally if they have any AA or even a guy who's decent with a decimator you'll go down pretty quickly. The 35mm is great for taking out tanks on the move though, better than the bombs in many cases since any tank pilot worth a damn won't have too much trouble avoiding your bombs while peppering you with chaingun/machine gun rounds or even tank shells. Liberators are great for partners when you have air superiority or 3 people if you don't. Other than that in most cases you're just asking to be killed

If you are a good pilot, go for it.
One of the members of my outfits air division does that. He uses the lib as a gunship and I can tell you right now, 9 times out of 10 he'll drop any reaver or mosquito on him. He's been known to get in dogfights with multiple aircraft and drop them all.

Yeah, if you are a good lib pilot you can be pretty effective as just a gunship because of the front gun, which is a 35mm cannon compared the reavers 20mm mg or skeets 12mm mg. Its much more powerful and you could easily take down a reaver if you catch them offgaurd. Its a bit harder id they attack first but still possible.

Keep a tail gunner and the Tail ammo, drop all the bombs for 35
Now go kill. The important thing is to have a good tail gunner, and to have voice to him. Then dive and strafe. The 35 kills most infantry in about 3 hits, and with a little skill that's not hard to get. But what's really fun is to attack vehicle convoys. The 35 chews up armor. Try it and have fun (oh yeah the Tail gunner is to fend off aircraft, and to hit targets as you pull out, but it takes some coordination to get right)
