Before the Terran Republic there was the Illuminati.
The secret society gained power by taking control of important positions, like Swiss banks and winning elections to presidencies. Their major push started in 2004 when the United States of America's President Howard Dean's aircraft (who defeated George W. Bush, an Illuminati) was 'accidentally' shot down by the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force Harrier fighter aircraft. In a few decades, they had controlled the globe. Under one government, the military was cut back. After all, it was no longer needed. The laws were enforced by a much smaller, more efficient police force. Although semi-just, the rule was oppressive and powerful. But then there was a neo-Fascist revolt across the world. They called themselves the "Terran Republic". The revolt succeded, and the Terrans have ruled for 1,112 years. But the Illuminati is far fron dead...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vanu Sovereignty Sanctuary 1000 hours ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A pickup truck, basically an ANT front and a flatbed rear, was parking outside of a small government building. Men In Black had escorted everyone out of the area. Except one. John Mitchell was a blue-collar worker who was cleaning the roof of the three-story building. Paintbrush in one hand and paint can on the floor, he was giving the building its new coat of paint. He had spent the last few hours cleaning the roof. He was alone, his co-workers having taken their optiona 15-minute break at this hour. John was never someone to leave things undone. He had a good childhood, reasonably good grades in the Education Institute, and was set for a mid-level college when his drug problem started. The newest trendy drug was "cardamine", obtained from an ingredient in some native grasses mixed with certain non-homemade chemicals. The drug produced euphoric effects in the user, and made him feel "high". However, it was the most addictive since "cocaine" from Earth. Costs were also about triple the old drugs, a dosage being about 50 credits. It ruined him. No college accepted him, his parents put him in a public school, and the only employer who would take him was the government. He heard voices from the street. "Baker! The crate's missing it's top." "What the hell? This is supposed to be..." "Ronson! Silence!" John looked over the side of the building. He saw what was in the box. It was a square pyramid statue, about 3 feet tall. On each side there was a ghastly eye. One of the Men In Black saw him. "Hey! You! Get down here! You're under arrest!" John ran.
John ran into the attic through a roof compartment. He hid there for an eternity to him, which was about 3 minutes. Someone brought out heat-imaging goggles. He could hear the voices from outside, the roof door was still open.
"There! In the attic!" "Is he resisting? Can we..." "Yes." He heard him speak as if he was speaking into a radio. "All units. Use of deadly force authorized. I repeat, we have a 2320 and deadly force IS authorized." He climbed out of the attic and on to the roof. He stepped in still-wet paint. At this point he didn't care, he was running for his life. He decided to make a jump for the next building. It was also a 3-story, but a bit lower. He was in too much of a hurry to guesstimate the distance between the two. He had been on the school warpball team, and was a regular at the gym. Could he do it? He began a sprint when he heard a laser pistol being shot at him. A Beamer. His body dispensed adrenalin, and he made the jump by just inches. "Shit! Air support! We need fucking air support!" yelled someone behind him. "Is this block secure? YOU DON'T FUCKING KNOW? We have a 2320 using the fucking rooftops! Get every sniper in the fucking Sanctuary!" He said this while taking more shots. All missed. Next was a jump from a 3-story to a 2-story. With a quick prayer and more adrenalin, he leaped. He half-tripped while jumping off the 3-story, but clung to the roof of the next building, holding on for dear life with his hands. He tried to pull himself up like in the movies, but it just spread skin oils and he lost grip. He decided to let go and fall. The fall was horrible. His knees and legbones felt like they were broken. In fact, they were just fractured, a miracle. He could walk but with extreme pain. He creeped up to the corner and looked. MIBs were encircling only the original building. He had evaded them! Snipers. They'll be bringing out snipers. He stealthily walked into the 2-story building. A stroke of luck! A clothes store! About 3 minutes later he walked out in completely different attire. He had a neon green shirt with a local band written on it and denim jeans. He bought some sneakers to replace his paint-stained boots. Paint stained! Shit! He looked, and there was a trail leading into the store. Some of the paint must have rubbed onto the roofs and the street. A taxi was parked a few blocks away, waiting for a customer. He ran for it. In the distance, sirens began to go off.
Clouds rolled in, obscuring the sun. There was rumbling in the distance. The whole land turned dark, and the scent of forecoming rain was in the air.
The taxi dropped him off at a cheap motel called "The Levantine." One of those places with Roman suites and free adult movies. He couldn't go home, it would put his girlfriend, who lived with him, in danger. As he got down, he beelined for the pay phone in the alley. He knew it was risky, but better a pay phone than the hotel's. He reached for his Credit Account Card. He stopped. Electronic tracking! They could nab him! He reached into his pocket for loose change. He stopped again. Fingerprints! He took out his painter's gloves and inserted .10 credits into the phone. He picked up the reciever and dialed home. "Marilith?" "John? Where the hell are you?" "They're after me!" "Who are?" "I don't know!" "Are you feeling all right?" "Yes. Men in Black. I saw something. A statue. They shot at me and chased me. I've changed clothes and I'm staying at the Levantine for the night." "That dump?" "It's farthest from where I saw..it." "Saw what?" "I was on the roof, painting. I saw them loading a statue of this pyramid with an eye in it. Then they started chasing me." "I think I know who they are. Can't say over the phone." "Can you check the news?" "Ok....Jesus! You're all over it! You're wanted! I'll meet you for dinner at the Levantine." "Ask for Andrew Jackson." "Ok, bye! Stay safe!" She hung up.
He walked in to the hotel. Nobody recognized him.
"Do you have a room?" A fat, greasy type guy swung around on his desk. "Always vacant." "Ok. I'm Andrew Jackson. I'm going to be meeting a relative, I just need the room for the night." "No problem. Do you want a deluxe suite?" "No, standard will be fine." "75 credits." He took the risk and used his credit card. He didn't have 75 credits in cash. Rain started to come down outside. "Here's the key card to room 229. Enjoy your stay!" He entered the room. Typical cheap motel room. Porn in the Holo Disc Video Drive and in the magazine racks in the bedroom. Bedsheets washed sometime last year. The whole place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. He half-expected to see some couple still in the room.... He calmed down and turned on the holo-vision. Some very disgusting bedroom scene involving two women, a man, and a dog came on. He instantly stopped the disc and switched over to the Auraxis Global Network, the Auraxis-wide news service. The only source of unbiased news, as they were the only neutral side in this whole damn war.... Marsman, the bass-heavy announcer, came on. "You are watching AGN. The Aurrrraxis Global Network! It's 1200 hours. We begin with a news alert. A certain "John Mitchell" is wanted by the Vanu State Police for several burglaries and faliure to arrive at trials. His last seen location was the Federal Building at 1000 Freemason Street..." His blood ran cold. "...his DNA and a holo-image of him are availible for download..." Someone was knocking on the door. "Who is it?" No answer. He looked through the lens. Nobody. He opened the door. He checked the hallways. Nobody. He closed the door. A blur tackled him to the ground. A glowing knife was visible just inches above his face. "I always hated you. I just needed a boyfriend to look normal. Needless to say, I usually end up killing mine for one reason or another..." Marilith's voice. She decloaked above him. She had been in an Infiltration suit. "There's a huge bounty on your head. A million credits. I want it. You see, I'm an assassin. I've kept it secret for a while. All I have to do is call the police and God only knows what they'll do with you...." He heard sirens in the distance. "I've already done that..." She started laughing like a maniac. He was too scared to show any emotion.
