Always a pleasure when i see Firefly post some of his best stuff, and always give me hope that eventually the USA still has some hope to salvage its international reputation and respect with the rest of the world. As for the "Pig-Fat Bullets" it did not originate in the philipine by some US general. It actually originated during 1650-1750 in India. When the British attempted to form the first British Sopoy Indian Army in serivce of the East Indian Company to protect the trade roots and to "persude" the natives in certain Indian states to co-operate. At that time there was already a small but growing Anti-British attitude, and the first Indians to join were actually Muslims not Hindus. Back then they still used Muskets, where you had bite the ends of smalle messured powder capsules, pour it down the barrel, and put the paper wad and lead musket ball before ramming it down. Unfortunately a rumour had spread to the Muslim troops said that the Waxy coating used to keep the paper powder waterproof was made from pig fat. They refused to follow orders until rectified. The British overseas brought court-marshall them, they refused and went on a riot, until the British changed the cartilges wax-coating for a substitute. So there you have a little peice of useless history... I hope you all didn't fall sleep.....

Well as much as it makes me upset and nauseous (sp?) to hear of all the cruel things done to both our troops and the Iraqi/Terrorists/Al Quadi(sp?)/et al I still firmly believe that no matter what happens going to war is never the best option. People who claim that we're justified going to war because we were attacked on 9/11 are only feeling how they wanted us to feel. Of course it's all right to be angry, frustrated, sad, pissed, whatever. But the point is that you'll never solve world conflict by creating more conflict! By going to war, over 500 more americans have died already, plus countless people (yes, they ARE people too, not just the enemy) from Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and anywhere else. Did those deaths bring the victims of the trade center attack back? Are they somewhere up in heaven saying "Oh good. We've killed enough terrorists now I can actually go live with God"? Of course not, the only people we're serving by going through all this is our own selves, our own pride. It's a wasted effort, because no matter how much we obliterate the opposition, we'll always face more of it at the end.
Go ahead, bash me, call me stupid or unpatriotic. The fact of the matter is that I don't believe the best way about this is through more violence. But I guess that's just my opinion.

Conflict most certainly does not end conflict. Think about this:
Sure, we went into Iraq and got rid of their horrible dictator. Sure, we bombed Afghanistan to try and kill the terrorists, and we bombed the hell out of Iraq to eradicate those threats. But in the meantime, we're killing innocent people - the fathers and brothers of more innocent people. What does this say? This tells those families that Americans are blood-thirsty terrorists who kill innocent people. Does this sound familiar? Then what happens? They vow revenge on America. It's a vicious circle. Scoff all you want at diplomacy, but diplomatic people are the only ones who are rational enough to end conflict peacefully.

Diplomacy only works with rational people. Muslim terrorist fanatics can not be reasoned with. That would absolutely fail horribly. They do not want peace - they want to erradicate us. They do not want to stop our military - they want to stop our way of life. |

the caution being is that it is not always the right action, however i have to agree with glaynor, its like the israel thing, they almost had peace about a year ago, a cease fire and talks about what to do with the occupyed lands, but what happened? palestinian partisans blew up a bus, israel struck back, and it started over again. but im not saying blow up all palestinans, im just saying, its hard to reason with em. |
