"We understand that a mushroom-shaped cloud about 3.5- to 4- kilometer (2.2 miles to 2.5 miles) in diameter was monitored during the explosion," Yonhap quoted an unidentified diplomatic source in Seoul as saying.

North Korea was founded on Sept. 9, 1948. Leader Kim Jong Il uses the occasion to stage performances and other events to bolster loyalty among the impoverished North Korean population.

Experts have speculated that North Korea might use a major anniversary to conduct a nuclear-related test, though there was no immediate indication that the reported explosion on Thursday was linked to Pyongyang's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

On April 22, train wagons at a railway station exploded in the North Korean town of Ryongchon, killing 160 people and injuring an estimated 1,300, according to some estimates. The blast was believed to have been sparked by a train laden with oil and chemicals that hit power lines.

The source in Beijing that told Yonhap about the explosion last week said it was reportedly bigger than the train explosion in Ryongchon.

Secretary of State Colin Powell says the United States believes a recent explosion in North Korea was, in his words, not a nuclear event. South Korean reports say a large mushroom-shaped cloud was caused by the explosion. VOA's Stephanie Ho reports from Washington.



Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Secretary Powell played down the severity of the North Korean explosion.

"We have seen reports of this explosion, but based on all the information that we have, it was not any type of nuclear event," he said. "We are trying to find out more about it, and what exactly it was, if anything, but it does not appear to be a nuclear event."

He said the United States is monitoring newspaper reports that there is activity going on at a potential North Korean nuclear test site.

"We have been watching it," he added. "We can not tell if it is normal maintenance activity, or something more."

Secretary Powell said North Korea is involved in de-nuclearization talks with five other countries, including the United States, China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia. He added that these other countries would also view a North Korean nuclear test with great alarm. Email this article to a friend.

By the way, not the size of an H-bomb. An A-bomb can destroy a city, an H-Bomb has a blast radius of about a state. That's why they tested one on an island, the blast just went through the water and didn't kill anybody. Still, that's a big fucking explosion in NK. I wonder what it was.
