your lounge, your mod: roundtable addendum

i'm making this thread as an addendum to hamma's roundtable thread.

about me:
i'm a relatively new mod to psu (i've been staff for almost a year, but hamma was lazy about giving me blue).
i've administered my own forums for fun, school, and work, so the job's not new to me. i've moderated for others' boards too, nullsoft being one of them.

this community is much like the others except for one thing: i like this one a lot better.

as a result, i'm a lot looser when it comes to moderating and admin-naziing.

now, i consider myself the guardian of the lounge. i browse the other forums, sure, but i consider this one, and those that inhabit it, to be my charge. as i mentioned, i will defend the lounge from flames and political arguments alike.
HOWEVER

the point:
i want some feedback on the moderation of the lounge.

some posts in the roundtable thread have gotten me thinking: some say that keeping threads on track and locking flamebait threads faster - even banning the furious flamers faster - would be a good thing.

what i want:
tell me what you want a lounge moderator to do.
give your ideas on locking & splitting threads and how they relate to the atmosphere and your sense of freedom of expression here.
explain what you like & don't like regarding styles of moderation, and how/if you'd like to see different styles in different forums of PSU.

you're probably getting the idea, so let's hear it.

jesus christ martyr, your a fine moderator, do we have to go over what we need to do as a community everytime someone says something to hurt someone else?

but since you asked its quite simple, dont nazi people for saying something someone else doesnt like or wont agree with, thats about it.

not every time. just every ... what, three years?

it's just important to me that i not lose sight of or get disconnected from the needs of my precious lounge, something that can happen without one's noticing it

I would have to agree with everay.

You are a damned fine moderator. I would like to say that the lounge has probably been my favourite forum, alongside the CDL and BOHICA forums. For the most part, because of the intelligent community, that seems to have overstepped the "omg hoo r u?" bullcrap that is spread all over the rest of the net like a taiwanese prostitute. In many ways, this aspect of our forums is created by the community, but controlled by the mods. For that, I am grateful.

Some things I like that mods do:
-Locking useless threads
-Controlling trolling and misbehavious with appropriate warnings and bans
-Establishing authority without being disconnected from the community.

Some thins I would like to see:
-Quicker response to modding (Could be fixed, as previously mentioned, by adding mroe mods)

Thats about it.

Personally, I think you should AXE anyone who openly flames someone else.

No, seriously, I think you should just delete flame posts. It pretty much **** the problem in the bud.

hmm.

deleting posts is something i've never, ever done here, and only on the rarest of occasions elsewhere. i feel that deleting a post is the ultimate naziism, followed by editing posts & profiles, then by banning.

i'd rather send an authoritatively demanding PM and have the user edit his or her own post.

Now that your a moderator Martyr you don't post your pointless pictures or reply with pointless phrases to retared threads anymore. You just lock them.

Sometimes though, you have to admit, it is funnier editing someone ele's post, but only if it is in good fun, and not always for rule enforcement.

I think the moderation in the forum is fine, as always. A few changes can be put into effect, which I outlined in the main Roundtable thread:

Starting a flamebait thread should result in the thread being deleted/locked and a warning in the form of a PM.

I would think a more liberal use of the split thread button could be handy. Also Electro; not many Admins like to delete posts. Like martyr said, it's viewed as very bad moderating, and some even see it as weak. Hamma is trying to run a forum based on free speech. Where would that free speech be if posts were deleted?

To that I say:

A: You already a fine mod, keep it up and keep people who just post nonsense and random swearing like Dhark at bay (which u guys have done)
B: Just remain who you are, you do a great job as it is and also are a good person with good posts..
C: Recap of A & B

Truth.
