It doesn't have anything to do with hippies. A police state is opposite to a hippie's ideals.
TBH I can understand the panicy reaction, not many people know those boxes come from Mario. A big box with a question marK(Hell any box with no sign of origin, that you didn't expect to show up) on it show up at your doorstep. What's inside of it? Do you want to open it and find out?

Actually this reminds me of a hack the guys at MIT did a while back-- they dressed up an entire hall like a Mario level with clouds, pipes, boxes, and everything. They also managed to put up a "High Score" chart listing various high scores/constants (For example, Avogadro: 6.02x10^23)
